NRL expert Phil Gould<\/a> has slammed the judiciary's decision to charge Reece Walsh<\/a> with a shoulder charge after the fullback was offered a $1500 fine for an early guilty plea.<\/p>\n

Walsh managed to stop Storm<\/a> centre Justin Olam from scoring in the 15th minute of Thursday's game but was later ruled to have committed an illegal act in the play.<\/p>\n

Gould believes the \ufeffBroncos star was incredibly hard done by.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffJustin Olam shaped for a shoulder charge long before Reece Walsh shaped for a shoulder charge … the man with the ball, once he does that, the defender has to react otherwise he's not protecting himself," he said on Nine's Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Canterbury Bulldogs general manager went further to offer a unique suggestion of how the NRL can judge the situation. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"People don't understand this stuff, they just want to eradicate it," he said.<\/p>\n

"I would like the judiciary, any member of the judiciary, to come and explain what they wanted Reece Walsh to do in that situation. I will gladly fly Justin Olam up to Sydney so you can demonstrate to us how you would make that tackle at that time."<\/p>\n

Blues Origin coach Brad Fittler also referenced a torn pectoral injury Tom Trbojevic suffered in 2019<\/a> when attempting to tackle Josh Addo-Carr on the wing. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Trbojevic opted to try tackle the former Storm winger around the waist but was wrong-footed and ended up in awkward position.<\/p>\n

Fittler believes if Walsh attempted the same defensive technique it could've been a similar outcome. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"In that situation with Reece he's only going to get injured," he said. "If he wants to stop that try he's only going to get injured."<\/p>\n

Former Australian fullback Billy Slater added \ufeffthere's many factors to consider when tackling that close to the tryline and sideline.<\/p>\n

"It's a tough position to be in because you're all heading for the same blade of grass," he said.<\/p>\n

"The 90-degree angle, it's a really tough position to be in but you've got a duty to play the game, and a duty to keep everyone safe and I feel that's what he did in that occasion."<\/p>\n
