After a mechanical failure at the season-opener<\/a> left him with just a handful of points, Will Brown's hopes of clawing back lost ground in the TCR Australia Series<\/a> has taken a hit.<\/p>\n

The Melbourne Performance Centre driver didn't complete a single flying lap across practice one and practice two at Phillip Island ahead of the second round of the season.<\/p>\n

His Audi RS3 LMS befell a curious gremlin that meant Brown suddenly stopped on track in the first practice session, causing the red flag to come out.<\/p>\n

The issue reoccurred in practice two and consigned Brown and his car to the pit lane, leaving the team scratching its head for answers.<\/p>\n

A hot lap session at the end of the day offered the team a chance to see if the issue had been remedied.<\/p>\n

Brown completed just one flying lap of the circuit without the car grinding to a halt, much to the delight of the nervous team.<\/p>\n

It was the second issue in two rounds after Brown suffered a driveshaft failure at the first round of the year at Symmons Plains, which ruled him out of the opening three races.<\/p>\n

The Supercars full-timer has just 10 points to his name after taking pole position at the season-opener, failed to finish race one, and didn't start race two or three.<\/p>\n

Brown was tipped to be a title contender this year in his new car, but the lost time in practice and guarantee he'll even be able to finish a race makes the comeback trail a sizable one.<\/p>\n

The lion's share of the field ran otherwise without much in the way of drama on day one.<\/p>\n

Tom Oliphant and Michael Clemente rolled out two brand new cars without a hitch.<\/p>\n

Oliphant, a BTCC race winner, was fourth and fifth fastest across the two sessions in his Lynk & Co 03.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Clemente improved from seventh to sixth across the two sessions in hia Cupra Leon.<\/p>\n

Having suffered an identical driveshaft failure as Brown at the first round, Zac Soutar made it through both practice sessions without any trouble.<\/p>\n

Soutar was second in practice one but opted not to run new tyres in practice two and was only ninth.<\/p>\n

Last year's champion Tony D'Alberto topped both practice sessions.<\/p>\n

The TCR Australia Series will take in qualifying at 11:35am on Saturday morning with the opening race of the weekend at 4:15pm, which will last 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Sunday will see two 30-minute races, the first at 11:30am and second at 4:15pm.<\/p>\n
