A frustrated B\ufeffroncos<\/a> coach Kevin Walters<\/a> has avoided risking a fine while seething at the performance of the officials during Thursday night's 24-16 loss to the Storm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a match that was marred by a steady stream of penalties and sin bins, the tide turned against Brisbane due to acts of ill discipline and controversy, with Patrick Carrigan's sin bin for a supposed hip drop<\/a> slammed by pundits.<\/p>\n

After the game, Walters refused to take the bait when he was asked to express what had left hi\ufeffm feeling so frustrated, telling reporters, "I won't comment because my contract is not big enough to pay the fine."<\/p>\n

However he was clearly flawed by the 17 penalties that made it a stop-start affair, with the Broncos copping three of the four sin bins in the game to make it an uphill battle.<\/p>\n

"We came here to play football, that's what we've been doing all year and I just don't feel that we got a game of football," Walters said.<\/p>\n

"I'll take the loss, we've lost before, but this is two good teams going at it and it just didn't become a game of football, that's how I felt watching."<\/p>\n

"I just didn't think we saw … it's Thursday night, it's prime time and we didn't see a good game of footy," he added.<\/p>\n

"I'm not sure how it happened, we had three guys (sin\ufeff binned), it's hard to win when that happens. Were they fair sin binnings? I won't make any comment because my contract's not big enough to pay the fine."<\/p>\n

Asked specifically about the decision to send Carrigan to the bin for a tackle on Nelson Asofa-Solomona that was deemed a hip drop by the Bunker official who reviewed it, Walters was exasperated.<\/p>\n

\"Carrigan\u00a0goes\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0bin\"<\/p>\n

"Well he slid down his legs," Walters said, adding a long pause for effect.<\/p>\n

Walters was vindicated the following day, with the NRL match review committee clearing Carrigan over the tackle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That decision would have pleased Nine commentator Billy Slater who couldn't believe Carrigan was marched \ufefffor slipping behind Asofa-Solomona after he was beaten by footwork.<\/p>\n

"I think they got that totally wrong," Slater said.<\/p>\n

"That's just momentum, swinging around the tackle."<\/p>\n

NRL great Cameron Smith added: "If Nelson doesn't grab his ankle and he gets up and plays the ball, it is nothing. Hip drops, seriously, what are we coming to?"<\/p>\n

Walters said the NRL needed to do something to address the confusion over hip drop tackles, with inconsistency dogging the game's efforts to get rid of the dangerous tackling technique.<\/p>\n

"You wouldn't want to see that happen in a grand final," Walters said. "You don't want to see the sin bin for that … That's what the NRL want you to do, is slide down the legs, and Patty did that."<\/p>\n

While Walters was left confused and frustrated by the way the game was officiated, he said his team had made a significant jump forward since they last played the Storm -a 60-12 thumping in August last year.<\/p>\n

"The good thing from our point-of-view is we've come here, tough environment, last time we came here we got beat by 50, so I reckon we've made some improvements and we've still got a period in this season to fix up some areas where we need to be better," Walters said.<\/p>\n

"We'll do that and then we'll be the team that we want to be."\ufeff<\/p>\n
