Hawthorn<\/a> captain\ufeff Tilly Lucas-Rodd has become the third AFLW<\/a> player to come out as non-binary, following in the footsteps of Gold Coast's Tori Groves-Little and Carlton's Darcy Vescio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lucas-Rodd revealed to the public that they were non-binary in a video posted to Hawthorn's website and social media channels on Wednesday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI think in the last couple of months I've been discovering more about who I am and my identity, so I wanted to create this video to let the fans and other people know a bit about me and what I've been discovering about myself," Lucas-Rodd said.<\/p>\n

"It's been a process (where) in the last couple of months I've been telling people, but for myself the past couple of years. I've recently come out to the wider community around me as non-binary, so I wanted to share that with everyone through this video.<\/p>\n

"I don't really identify strongly as my assigned gender at birth, which is female, so I don't really feel strongly that I fit into that label as a female, and at the same time I don't feel like I'm a male, either. I guess I'm in between that, so for me the label 'non-binary' feels most comfortable about how I identify in terms of my gender."<\/p>\n

Lucas-Rodd said being non-binary was\ufeff "different for everyone".<\/p>\n

"For me I'm really comfortable with 'they', 'them', so that's something that my friends and family have been using for the past couple of weeks and months now," they added.<\/p>\n

"They're my preferred pronouns."<\/p>\n

Lucas-Rodd\ufeff encouraged the public to talk to non-binary people about their experiences.<\/p>\n

"One main thing is just start conversations and have conversations," they said.<\/p>\n

"There's lots of non-binary people around.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes it can feel a bit uncomfortable, but I guess if it comes from the right place and you're doing it with love and care and because you want to know more … I think starting conversations is really important … Being non-binary is a different experience for everyone, so being open-minded and being willing to learn is the first step."<\/p>\n

The Hawk also urged the public to use people's preferred pronouns.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You might not understand it, but the main thing you can do is just show love to people and make sure that you're doing something that makes them feel comfortable," they said.<\/p>\n

Lucas-Rodd, 27, landed at Carlton when the Blues took them with pick 99 in the 2016 AFLW draft.<\/p>\n

The midfielder spent three seasons with Carlton and\ufeff three with St Kilda, before joining Hawthorn ahead of season seven of the AFLW.<\/p>\n
