Chaos reigned in the Premier League<\/a>\u2019s relegation battle as Everton<\/a> scored five goals in a surprising win to climb out of the bottom three and Leicester City<\/a> conceded five in a confidence-sapping loss to drop into it.<\/p>\n

Southampton\u2019s 11-year stay in the top division is surely over, meanwhile, after a 4-3 loss at Nottingham Forest plunged the last-placed team eight points from safety with three games left.<\/p>\n

There was a total of 21 goals in three games involving relegation-threatened teams, who appeared to take the view that attack was the best form of defense with time running out in the fight to avoid the drop.<\/p>\n

Everton\u2019s goal spree was the most surprising. A 5-1 victory at Brighton came out of nowhere, ending a seven-game winless run at the home of a team that had an outside shot at Champions League qualification.<\/p>\n

And they started in the best possible way, by scoring the opening goal just 34 seconds into the clash.<\/p>\n

"People will be out there thinking, 'Right, OK, there's life in that team' but we've never lost sight of that," Everton boss Sean Dyche said after the match.<\/p>\n

"It just reminds the players that their work ethic, their commitment to the cause, their commitment to the group is really important because I know there's quality. They're very high, feeling the feel-good factor. But it's only another step.<\/p>\n

"I said that after Arsenal, and sometimes people forget that. There's three more big steps we've got to take."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Even wilder was Fulham\u2019s 5-3 win over Leicester, which is in danger of going down just seven years after capturing the league title in one of the greatest sporting stories of all time.<\/p>\n

Leicester and Leeds fell into the relegation zone and are tied on 30 points, two behind Everton and three adrift of Forest.<\/p>\n

More worrying for Leicester is its remaining schedule, with games to come against Liverpool at home, Newcastle away and West Ham at home.<\/p>\n
