Family, friends, and the wider racing community gathered at Flemington on Monday to farewell jockey<\/a> Dean Holland.<\/p>\n

Holland died a fortnight ago following a two-horse crash during a race<\/a> at Donald, in country Victoria. He was 34 years old.<\/p>\n

\ufeffA gofundme page was created to support his partner, Lucy, and their four young children. Holland and Lucy had been planning to marry in December.<\/p>\n

By Monday morning it had raised $1.7 million – surpassing the goal of $500,000 – which gofundme told Wide World of Sports is "the largest and fastest-growing" page on the site in the last year.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHolland's sister Kirstie Arnel\ufeff remembered the fallen jockey as a larrikin and devout family man.<\/p>\n

"I'm \ufeffstill in utter shock that I'm standing here and I'm never going to see you in person, or on our TV screens, or hear your voice on the phone ever again," she told the hundreds of mourners.<\/p>\n

"Life has a funny way of making us realise that maybe we should be more vulnerable with our family members and tell them more often about the way we feel. So today I hope you're listening somehow and can hear me.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI just want you to know that I will always be right beside Lucy and the kids. I will support them with all that I have and I will love them all like they are my own.<\/p>\n

"We will \ufefftake great pleasure of making you known and remembered as much as we can without you being present in their lives.<\/p>\n

"My heart is completely shattered.<\/p>\n

"I've sure taken some comfort in knowing Australia loved you just as much as me."<\/p>\n

While he was a South Australian product, \ufeffHolland made Victoria his home and enjoyed great success around the state.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He won the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap in March, the biggest victory of his career as he saluted on In Secret for the Godolphin owners.<\/p>\n

Holland impressed everyone with his classy speech after that win<\/a>, refusing to celebrate out of respect for jockeys Jamie Kah and Craig Williams who had fallen earlier that day.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He had 1080 career wins to his name, totalling more than $32 million in prizemoney for connections. He won the Adelaide Cup twice, in 2015 and 2019, as well as the 2021 Geelong Cup aboard Tralee Rose.<\/p>\n

His close friend-turned-mentor and coach, James Winks, \ufeffpaid tribute to the riding skills and work ethic of Holland.<\/p>\n

"He was naturally gifted and rarely made a mistake," Winks said on Monday.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe never doubted his ability, and he was always willing to learn and apply his trade.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffBut it was his instincts to assess a race after leaving the machines (barriers), that you can't teach, and that's what I took immense pride in. It was beautiful to watch.<\/p>\n

"He was simply a gentleman of the sport."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The hearse made its way down the famed Flemington straight as mourners farewelled Holland.<\/p>\n
