Australian boxer<\/a> Stevie Spark was "robbed" in Mexico as the sport was left stunned by the judges' scorecards.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old Toowoomba product, who earned national respect when he fought Tim Tszyu on short notice after Michael Zerafa pulled out<\/a> in 2021, fought a 10-round thriller against Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez<\/a> vs John Ryder\ufeff.<\/p>\n

The Aussie was knocked down in the sixth round but otherwise \ufefflooked the better of the two fighters during their bout for the WBA Inter-Continental Super Light title.<\/p>\n

However when the decision went to the scorecards, it was little surprise to see the judges lean in favour of the hometown pugilist.<\/p>\n

Valenzuela won a split decision 96-93, 94-95, 95-94 despite many viewers agreeing Spark had won the bout.<\/p>\n

\ufeffTwo of the three judges were Mexico locals, and Australian boxing has an unfortunate history of odd decisions when fighting overseas.<\/p>\n

Prominent commentators Jessica McCaskill and Darren Barker awarded the fight to Spark – as did promoter Eddie Hearn – and social media lit up with experts and punters alike bemoaning the decision.<\/p>\n

"Australia's Stevie Spark has been robbed by split decision in Mexico," Main Event host Ben Damon tweeted.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Since losing to Tszyu in 2021, Spark had won four fights on the trot before Sunday's dodgy defeat.<\/p>\n

His career record now sits 16-3 with 14 knockout wins.<\/p>\n
