NRL<\/a> chief executive Andrew Abdo<\/a> has said New Zealand could host Magic Round once the current contract with Brisbane expires after next year.<\/p>\n

"Why wouldn't we consider putting more content in New Zealand whether it's Magic Round or something else, absolutely," Abdo told 2GB's Continuous Call Team<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"That's why it was important to take the All Stars there for the first time.<\/p>\n

"So Magic Round's an option but so too is perhaps thinking about Test matches or the end-of-the-season internationals."<\/p>\n

Despite the \ufeffsuccess of the event in Brisbane, Abdo argued that shopping around \ufeffthe opportunity to host Magic Round could expand the reach of the NRL in Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

"We've always got to think about how we grow the game," he said.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"In some respects, you'd like to think that you can build a tradition and really make this big and special [in Brisbane]. The other option for us is thinking about the market and giving fans an opportunity to travel somewhere else new.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe've got one more year committed here next year, then after that, the commission is going to have to make a call around where is the best place to play it.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffNew Zealand is an incredibly important market for us and we've had huge growth in fans in New Zealand over the last couple of years."<\/p>\n

"It's not just about the \ufeffcommercial turn, that's a factor, but it's also around where are you going to build an event where you can give someone a unique experience that is authentically rugby league too, so there's that X-factor," he said.<\/p>\n

Magic Round was first held at Suncorp Stadium in 2019\ufeff and has been an annual event since – with of exception of 2020 during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe have been building this for a number of years," Abdo said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe're talking about 50,000 people travelling interstate to experience the weekend … It's families, it's boys' trips, it's people that haven't seen each other for a while coming together – and it's not just NRL fans – this is an unusual opportunity for everyone in the game to get together and be in one place, and that's pretty special."<\/p>\n
