Brisbane<\/a> coach Kevin Walters<\/a> insists his relationship with Ben Ikin<\/a> is not why the latter appears poised to leave the club.<\/p>\n

\ufeffIkin had an interview with Queensland Rugby League<\/a> on Wednesday and looks to be a strong chance to land the chief executive job left vacant by Rohan Sawyer.<\/p>\n

If successful, it's reported Ikin would essentially have to quit his \ufeffBroncos role immediately, leaving the Red Hill club without a head of football midway through the NRL season.<\/p>\n

The 46-year-old returned to the club in June 2021\ufeff following a career as a television host and analyst.<\/p>\n

\"Broncos<\/p>\n

He spent four seasons of his 150-game NRL career at Red Hill, and was Walters' halves partner in the victorious 2000 grand final.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut the relationship between them reportedly turned frosty last year, and Broncos hierarchy had to mediate to ensure Walters and Ikin could continue working together.<\/p>\n

With Ikin poised to leave the Broncos it's been speculated his fallout with the coach is a factor.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Triple M's The Rush Hour<\/em> on Wednesday, Walters scoffed at that suggestion.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe're working together every day," Walters said.<\/p>\n

\"Broncos<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe media have a role to play in our game, to create headlines. That's OK\ufeff, that's all part of the bubble of rugby league.<\/p>\n

"Ben is a great fella, he's been working with us at the Broncos\ufeff. We haven't had an in-depth conversation about what's happening at the QRL, I believe he was having an interview today, so that's good for Ben.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe will go – if he does go – with our blessing."<\/p>\n

The Broncos missed the finals last season, but have started 2023 on a tear and sit top of the table with seven wins from nine games.<\/p>\n

They take on Manly on Friday night in Magic Round.<\/p>\n
