An Australian billionaire's bold bid to start his own Formula 1<\/a> team would include fielding a female driver.<\/p>\n

David Dicker, who started ASX-listed IT distributor Dicker Data, recently revealed lofty ambitions to start a team out of his remote New Zealand base.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The audacious effort would see cars and engines designed and built across the Tasman, becoming the first team out of the UK to do so.<\/p>\n

The businessman who founded Rodin Cars started manufacturing boutique single-seater racing machines out of a small base north of Christchurch, designed for rich motorsport enthusiasts keen to taste F1-like speeds. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Dicker recently bought into world-renowned racing team Carlin, which has had the likes of F1 drivers Lando Norris, George Russell, and Carlos Sainz go through its junior ranks.<\/p>\n

The teams currently runs in Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4 and its founder, Trevor Carlin, was team principal at F1 team Jordan.<\/p>\n

The team has all the right ingredients for a bid to be on the grid, but is it all just noise and a bit of a PR blitz to promote the Rodin Carlin alignment?<\/p>\n

The key to its entry is a promise to field a female driver, which, as it stands, looks unlikely to come to fruition.<\/p>\n

Among the requirements to obtain an FIA Super Licence necessary to race in F1 is a minimum of 40 points acquired over the previous three seasons across categories recognised by the FIA.<\/p>\n

Points are accumulated from where a driver finishes in the championship from first to 10th.<\/p>\n

Only one female driver currently qualifies. Jamie Chadwick, it would seem, is the leading candidate if the plans come to fruition.<\/p>\n

She won the W Series three times in a row, which currently gets her across the 40-point threshold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, by the time a Rodin Carlin team would be ready for F1, her points will have expired unless she enjoys success in categories elsewhere and meets the requirements.<\/p>\n

There are currently no women racing in F2 but it's hoped the establishment of the F1 Academy will see that change and promote female participation on the junior ladder.<\/p>\n

"We'll make the whole car here and we guarantee to put a woman in one of the seats," Dicker told Motor Sport Magazine.<\/p>\n

"We'd be the only team that's got a full junior programme. We've been covering the entire spectrum from F4 all the way up to F2 and no one else is even close to doing it.<\/p>\n

"A lot of people would be really interested in getting a team that was based in New Zealand into the F1 programme. It'd do a lot for Formula 1."<\/p>\n

Funding the program is seemingly no issue. Dicker's business reportedly turned nearly $3 billion in revenue last year.<\/p>\n

Dicker has more than $465 million in resources to start an F1 team and would be "perfectly happy" to have Chadwick drive for him. She currently races in Indy NXT, which is one step below IndyCar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The deadline for an expression of interest was reportedly extended from April 30 to May 15.<\/p>\n

Up to two teams could enter F1 as early as 2025, although options are available for 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n

Any new entrant must pay a $273 million compensation fee for the dilution of profit shares among existing teams.<\/p>\n

Dicker said he wasn't confident his bid would be successful but said he had a "compelling offer" to F1 bosses.<\/p>\n

Any prospective entrants will have to pay a $33,000 administration fee for the formal expression of interest, which is followed by a $495,000 entry application fee.<\/p>\n

There are two other teams thought more than likely to submit an entry, namely Andretti's effort with Cadillac as well as leading F2 team Hitech GP.<\/p>\n

Many teams have shouted about showing interest in F1 as long as entries have been accepted, although few ever come to fruition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Andretti-Cadillac program is perhaps the strongest bid on the table for the latest round of applications.<\/p>\n

Little has been said of Hitech GP, although the team was known to have expressed an interest in bidding for AlphaTauri amid talks of a potential sale.<\/p>\n

Other outsiders are Panthera Team Asia and Formula Equal, the latter an effort being led by former British American Racing team boss Craig Pollock.<\/p>\n

Existing F1 teams have largely been opposed to the idea of adding cars to the grid for fears of diluting revenue shares.<\/p>\n
