R\ufeffugby league<\/a> icon Phil Gould<\/a> has taken the blowtorch to Newcastle<\/a> players who have escaped to Bali for a holiday during their bye week.<\/p>\n

It was revealed on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus<\/em><\/a> podcast \ufeffa group of Knights players have opted to head overseas as the rest of the competition flocks to Brisbane for Magic Round.<\/p>\n

This is despite the Hunter side's struggles on the field, with a 43-12 thumping at the hands of Parramatta last week<\/a>\ufeff relegating them to 14th on the ladder, with only three wins and a draw from nine games.<\/p>\n

Gould was shocked to learn coach Adam O'Brien had not used the bye week to rally his troops and build a platform for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

"It wouldn't happen in my day," Gould said.<\/p>\n

"I'd always use the bye round… for me that was always a time to go back and refresh, to look at some things that maybe we're not doing as well as we would have liked, or maybe there's some things we can add to our game, or maybe we need a refresher course.<\/p>\n

"For me the benefit of the bye was not getting busted on the weekend, was not going out. It gave you two weeks to get ready for your next game instead of one week.<\/p>\n

"It just wouldn't have happened in my day. For me, it was two weeks to get ready for your next game, and you shouldn't lose if you had the two weeks to get ready.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

The Knights finished seventh on the ladder in O'Brien's first two seasons in charge, but sunk last year to be 14th with only six wins for the year.<\/p>\n

While the club has already secured half that number from only nine games this season, Newcastle remains some way off being a title contender.<\/p>\n

Gould said the bye round holiday may not end up hurting them, but added he would never allow his players to do it.<\/p>\n

"I couldn't do it as a coach, I couldn't do it as a player," he said.<\/p>\n

"It might turn out to be the best thing, getting over there with some warm weather and sun on their backs. It might be the answer, I don't know. And if they come back (and win) they will say it is the answer.<\/p>\n

"But there's three byes this year, you do it three times I guarantee it's not going to help you.<\/p>\n

"Maybe (O'Brien) thought after what he said after the (Eels loss), maybe they're a bit busted.<\/p>\n

"It's a time to replenish, to treat your injuries, to get ready for the following week, and it's a refresher course.<\/p>\n

"I remember when I was a player and we had byes, (coach) Warren Ryan used to flog us. It put steel in your team, it put steel in your attitude.<\/p>\n

"You are paid to train and play, that's what you are paid to do. Find something else to do, find another job if you don't want this job.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Wide World of Sports contacted Newcastle but the club opted not to comment.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Newcastle's next outing is against Gold Coast on Sunday week.<\/p>\n
