Alpine<\/a> sporting director Alan Permane has admitted the team performed poorly as their Azerbaijan Grand Prix<\/a> went from bad to worse at the weekend.<\/p>\n

The horror weekend on the streets of Baku began \ufeffwith Pierre Gasly<\/a>'s car bursting into flames<\/a> on Friday, triggering a red flag that ate into the event's only practice time because of the revised sprint format.<\/p>\n

The engine fire \ufeffforced Alpine's mechanics to replace the car's power unit, including the exhaust.<\/p>\n

After that incident, teammate Estaban Ocon<\/a>'s car remained in the garage as the team investigated an issue to do with the rear of his A523.<\/p>\n

"You need to start off well prepared, and just have a smooth weekend," Permane told the media.<\/p>\n

"We had that with neither car in FP1, and it snowballed out of control from there. You make your own luck with things like that. Honestly, we didn't do a good enough job.<\/p>\n

"We had a hose fail on one car which gave us a huge fire on one car and we had a problem with the build of the gearbox on the other car.<\/p>\n

"I think Pierre did one or two timed laps in FP1, Esteban did two or maybe three and from there you go into qualifying."<\/p>\n

Gasly later crashed out of qualifying, while Ocon failed to reach the top end.<\/p>\n

"Pierre had an accident which was unfortunate but Esteban did an incredible job to qualify 12th with the car he had," Permane said.<\/p>\n

Unable to recover from their nightmarish\ufeff build-up, the team failed to pick up championship points in the sprint race<\/a> and the grand prix<\/a> after clambering to 14th and 15th place.<\/p>\n

The result follows the blow delivered in Australia when Gasly and Ocon collided in the chaotic final moments of the Australian Grand Prix<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The French manufacturer \ufeffcurrently sits sixth in the constructors' championship with eight points.<\/p>\n
