T\ufeffiger Woods<\/a> has split with long-time caddie Joe LaCava, in yet another sign the 15-time major champion is done as a competitive force.<\/p>\n

Woods underwent ankle surgery<\/a> after he was forced to withdraw from the Masters in April<\/a>, sidelining him indefinitely. <\/p>\n

At 47 years old, with a fused spine and a leg full of metal after his 2021 car crash<\/a>, the reality is Woods' body will simply not allow him to compete at the top level.<\/p>\n

The Golf Channel's Todd Lewis broke the news that LaCava is now caddying for world No.4 Patrick Cantlay, a move that has the blessing of Woods.<\/p>\n

"This is not a one off, but a full time move for LaCava," Lewis tweeted.<\/p>\n

LaCava has caddied for Woods since 2011, having previously been with Fred Couples for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

"Tiger's not going to play much going forwards," LaCava told PGATour.com.<\/p>\n

"Obviously he's not retiring. But he's going to play two to six tournaments a year.<\/p>\n

"Tiger and I have talked about if something were to come up, feel free to do something. <\/p>\n

"And when this opportunity arose, I checked with Tiger. And he said, 'You're crazy not to take the job, go forward, go win some tournaments, go have a great time.'"\ufeff<\/p>\n

The split is in stark contrast to the last time Woods parted ways with his caddie. That came in 2011, when Steve Williams was fired after working part-time for Adam Scott when Woods was sidelined with injury.<\/p>\n

Woods has conceded his appearances will be limited to the four major championships and one or two other tournaments each year. Aside from the Masters in April, his only other appearance in 2023 was the Genesis Invitational in February, a tournament he hosts on behalf of his foundation.<\/p>\n

His ankle surgery means he's almost certain to miss the PGA Championship, which starts on May 18.<\/p>\n

He's also doubtful for the US Open in June and the Open Championship in July.<\/p>\n

Cantlay has won eight times on the PGA Tour, and was named player of the year in 2020-21, the same season he won the FedEx Cup, but is yet to win a major title. He finished third at the 2019 PGA Championship, won by Brooks Koepka.<\/p>\n
