A\ufeffFL<\/a> legend Mick Malthouse<\/a> has weighed in on Andrew Dillon's appointment as the league's new CEO, saying his personal choice would've been current Tigers boss Brendon Gale.<\/p>\n

Gale's name has been linked with the AFL CEO job for years after Richmond's incredible run of success over the last six years, but he was overlooked for Dillon<\/a>, who has worked alongside his predecessor Gillon McLachlan<\/a> in the AFL for an extended period.<\/p>\n

Like many, Malthouse said he was left "bemused" by why it took the AFL so long to appoint Dillon, having spent over $1 million on the CEO hunt in total.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"You'd have to be in a cave not to work out that Andrew was going to get the job," he told Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I personally would've been going for a bloke like Brendon Gale because he's been at the coalface, he's come from interstate, he's played at a club that struggled a bit, he took over a struggling club, made money and (won) premierships.<\/p>\n

"He knows the ins and outs of grassroots and the coalface, and that cannot be lost to football."<\/p>\n

Malthouse said Dillon's primary objective should be to ensure parity around the league, lamenting the "abandonment" of multiple clubs under the previous regime.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe bigger clubs have done very, very well, but the poorer clubs remain poor," he said.<\/p>\n

"Even though it's a social system, we're seeing a lot of clubs not journey up the ladder where we'd like them to be.<\/p>\n

"Gold Coast is a classic case, a new club that's come in and hasn't made the eight at all.<\/p>\n

"Our priority has got to be a good competition, a tough competition where everyone has a chance to win a premiership.<\/p>\n

"I'm talking about the football here, not the finances, where we could do a lot better."<\/p>\n

Malthouse doesn't believe the way the AFL is run will be too different under Dillon as it has been under McLachlan.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe are a domestic competition, we're not worldwide, we can't really call on people from outside the system unless we're bold enough to be able to say, 'Look, we do need someone from the outside to look in at our game and see where it can go', because at the moment we're sort of dead in the water," he said.<\/p>\n

"We get to a certain level and there's really nowhere to go. So we probably need either someone who has been through the whole system, or someone from outside the system.<\/p>\n

"That's nothing against Andrew Dillon, I'm sure he will do a good job. The groundwork has been done for him over a number of years."<\/p>\n
