Mercedes boss Toto Wolff<\/a> says Formula 1<\/a> needs to understand why Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix<\/a> was "boring".\ufeff<\/p>\n

Red Bull scored a dominant 1-2 finish, with Sergio Perez<\/a> leading home Max Verstappen<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The high-speed Baku street circuit usually delivers one of the most exciting and chaotic races of the season, but the overwhelming consensus was that this year's event failed to live up to the hype.<\/p>\n

Azerbaijan saw the first of six sprint races for the season, with a new format that moved qualifying for the grand prix to Friday, with Saturday devoted entirely to the sprint.<\/p>\n

The sprint race had its share of controversy, particularly a clash between George Russell and Max Verstappen that left the Red Bull driver fuming, with microphones catching Verstappen calling Russell a "dickhead"<\/a> after the pair exchanged words.<\/p>\n

"[The grand prix] wasn't a thriller," said Wolff. <\/p>\n

"Just no overtaking, even with a big pace difference. It made it not great entertainment.<\/p>\n

"We have to analyse the weekend with the sprint format, where there are positives that we can take out, but in the end it all comes down to racing.<\/p>\n

"It needs the tough battles, and I think the highlight [in the sprint race] was George and Max being able to battle it out. There was none of that.<\/p>\n

"Even if you are within 0.2 of a second, it is very difficult to overtake, nearly impossible to overtake, unless the other driver makes a mistake.<\/p>\n

"We need to really look at it and how we can avoid a boring race."<\/p>\n

Wolff also cautioned against rushing to judgement about the format.<\/p>\n

"I think after a race weekend like this we must not talk it down overall, and say that is the wrong direction and we need to change completely," he said.<\/p>\n

"It is more about understanding why was it not so entertaining. We had two cars that are sailing into the sunset on merit and then there's a 20-second gap, and I wouldn't know today between Aston Martin, Ferrari and us who is quicker. You are stuck where you are stuck and that is pretty much it.<\/p>\n

"For us, it is about finding more data sets in the next races, see how this is going to develop and then maybe we need to adjust."<\/p>\n
