Former Wallaby Stephen Hoiles believes \ufeffthe next Rugby Australia<\/a> chief executive has a golden opportunity to oversee a boom era for the game as long as they possess the ability to manage the strong personalities of Hamish McLennan and Eddie Jones.<\/p>\n

RA is on the hunt for a new boss following Monday's surprise resignation of Andy Marinos<\/a>, just four months out from the start of the men's Rugby World Cup in France.<\/p>\n

\ufeffRumblings of a strained relationship between Marinos and RA chairman McLennan have since emerged while former Wallabies Phil Waugh and Phil Kearns have been floated as possible replacements.<\/p>\n

The successful candidate will step in at a critical juncture for the game, with a private \ufeffequity deal in motion and home World Cups in 2027 and 2029 – as well as a British and Irish Lions tour in 2025 – on the horizon.<\/p>\n

"It'd be a great time to come into rugby and be involved in the sport," Hoiles said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"You've got a bullish chairman who's out there and he's in market and doing some good things. You've got a proven head (Wallabies) coach (Jones). So you're going to want someone that's capable of managing some big personalities."<\/p>\n

Hoiles also observed that McLennan had already been far more prominent in the public eye than the more reserved Marinos.<\/p>\n

"Doesn't Hamish sort of act like a CEO at the moment anyway?" Hoiles pondered in conversation with Morgan Turinui.<\/p>\n

"It's like an executive chairman, the (former RA chief executive John) O'Neill days was almost like a combination (of chairman and chief executive)," Turinui replied.<\/p>\n

"I actually think that Andy was a quite a good foil for Hamish, as you mentioned Hamish has that role out there and Andy seemed to be the relationship guy in the background.<\/p>\n

"Now what Hamish wants to do hands-on wise, I think will predicate what you want from a CEO. Is it genuinely like a COO, operational, hands-on, running the exco in at RA and you let Hamish blaze away as he does?<\/p>\n

"It'll be interesting to see who the candidates are. Rugby Australia don't have a classic COO that you would think about bringing up."<\/p>\n

Marinos has been at the helm since 2021 and will step down from his post in June to "pursue new opportunities."<\/p>\n

Monday's news came less than a week after RA reported an $8.2 million surplus<\/a> and as it prepares to follow New Zealand Rugby's private equity lead.<\/a><\/p>\n

"I wonder how the \ufeffprivate equity people and model will influence (Marinos' replacement) and what influence they want if they buy a share," Turinui said.<\/p>\n

\"Andy<\/p>\n

"If they buy 20 per cent of the game… how much of a say do they get, do they get a couple of board members? Do they get a say in who the CEO is? How will that affect the timing?"<\/p>\n

\ufeff<\/em>Marinos was publicly praised by McLennan for his work to get the governing body to a place of financial stability in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Turinui said being part of the successful bid teams to win the 2027 and 2029 World Cup hosting rights would go down as Marinos' "\ufeffhuge achievement."<\/p>\n

"And just getting rugby back on its feet again to be able to push forward. I think the timing is good around the AGM last week, some positive operating financial news," he said.<\/p>\n

"There's a lot of positives to Andy Marinos' time."<\/p>\n
