Phil Gould<\/a> has branded referee Grant Atkins' response to Josh Reynolds<\/a> an 'overreaction' after the Bulldogs<\/a> half was handed a $1000 fine for his outburst towards the official.<\/p>\n

Right on half-time, Reynolds was called out by Atkins<\/a> after he was penalised for flopping on Dragons fullback Tyrell Sloan.<\/p>\n

The former New South Wales State of Origin No.6 then asked Atkins: "What did I do?".<\/p>\n

"I thought you got him in the back of the head on the way down," Atkins explained.<\/p>\n

Reynolds replied, "Bullshit I hit him in the back of the head".<\/p>\n

Atkins responded: "\ufeffI beg your pardon?".<\/p>\n

"Come out here, come out here, come here. Don't say a word."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Atkins was visibly irate after Reynolds' comment, and Gould believed it was over the top when asked by Nine reporter Danny Weidler if it was 'too emotional'.<\/p>\n

"Absolutely yeah, that was an overreaction," he said on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em>. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Gould did however explain Reynolds wasn't without fault, indicating the outburst from the Bulldogs half will be discussed with him.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Well you can't swear to the referee, it's simple," he said.<\/p>\n

"He didn't abuse the referee, he didn't call the referee a name or question his integrity or anything like that, what he was referring to was what the referee accused him of, which he didn't do, that's what he said.<\/p>\n

"But we'll counsel Josh on the way he speaks to the referees."<\/p>\n

But the Bulldogs supremo believes Reynolds isn't the only person involved that required education. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"The other reaction (from Atkins) was very emotional and as a referee he needs to be helped in that regard as well," he said.<\/p>\n

Reynolds apologised to Atkins on the field in the second half and has since admitted his actions weren't a good look with young fans watching the game.<\/p>\n

"It's obviously not a great look, and for me as a role model for young kids in the game \u2013 I love being a role model for young kids \u2013 I wish I chose my wording a bit better," Reynolds told Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't an actual personal attack on the ref, it wasn't about him at all, it was more about the situation … a big call like that, a big piggyback penalty like that when we've got them (the Dragons) in the corner. As a player, I'm allowed to ask the question and have an opinion on that call.<\/p>\n

"Do I wish I chose my words better? One hundred per cent. And I'm really sorry to all the kids out there who had to hear that.<\/p>\n

"I am a passionate person, I care about the result, every battle, every single play I'm in, and costing my team a penalty like that kills me."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Last year, then-Melbourne Storm hooker Brandon Smith received a three-week ban<\/a> for calling referee Adam Gee a "cheating bastard" while James Tamou was banned for only one week<\/a> towards the end of the season when he referred to Ben Cummins as "f—ing incompetent".<\/p>\n
