The vicious assault on referee Kodhr Yaghi should have left every sports fan in the country "sickened", according to Socceroos<\/a> legend Craig Foster<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yaghi was allegedly attacked after the Greenacre Eagles lost to the Padstow Hornets<\/a> at Padstow Oval on Friday night.<\/p>\n

The 46-year-old, who has been refereeing for 25 years, is expected to undergo surgery in Liverpool Hospital on a jaw he said was broken in three places, along with "missing teeth and God knows what else".<\/p>\n

Amateur boxer Adam Abdullah, who was serving a suspension for his involvement in another brawl during a home game six weeks ago, allegedly rushed onto the field and attacked Yaghi.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has been arrested and charged with \ufeffwounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and affray<\/a>. He was refused bail to appear in court on Monday.<\/p>\n

"I was sickened to have to wake up to this type of story. I mean, it's sport at the end of the day for heaven's sake," Foster said on Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"How can this even occur? It's difficult to conceptualise. But nevertheless it has occurred and poor Kodhr has the support of millions of football fans around the country."<\/p>\n

Foster said while thankfully instances of violence against referees were rare, state-based federations and the FFA need to work together to better protect match officials "even at this amateur level of the game".<\/p>\n

Foster said the attack on Yaghi, as well as the assault on Melbourne City goalie Tom Glover in an ugly pitch invasion during the Melbourne Derby last December proved football "still has a bit of work to do".<\/p>\n

"It was in a public park, and so the federation and association are saying that it's even more difficult to police that area, because it is in a public zone," Foster said.<\/p>\n

"So how do you stop it in this context? That's the question that has to be answered, and it simply must be, because we see a lot of abuse of referees, young referees, all around the country, not just in our game but across all of sport. It's absolutely unacceptable."<\/p>\n

Mark Bosnich said respect has to be returned to referees.<\/p>\n

"Respect has got to come back for the referees, or you won't have any referees to come down to referee any of your sports and then won't be any games," he said on 2GB with Ben Fordham.<\/p>\n

"It's time the powers that be clamped down in some type of way to make sure the deterrents basically do what is there for."<\/p>\n

The Greenacre Eagles Football Club said in a statement "all forms of violence have no place in our game".<\/p>\n

"Our club has made the decision to withdraw the team from the competition for the remainder of the 2023 season," the club said.<\/p>\n
