Mixed Martial Arts star Nate Diaz<\/a> turned himself into police in New Orleans to face charges, jeopardising his participation in his exhibition bout against Jake Paul<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Diaz was charged with second degree battery arising from a weekend street brawl outside a pizza restaurant, which left a man unconscious via chokehold.<\/p>\n

The battery charge is a felony which means it is punishable by up to eight years in prison, a $2000 fine, or both.<\/p>\n

Diaz's legal team\ufeff says he acted in self-defence, with the star posting bond and cleared to return home to Stockton, California.<\/p>\n

The MMA fan-favourite is currently scheduled to face Paul in a boxing match in August, but his legal troubles could get in the way. That led social media performer KSI to put his hand up to replace Diaz if he's unable to fight.<\/p>\n

"Well, if that mean Jake won't have an opponent in August\u2026Then I'll gladly come as the replacement after I KO Joe Fournier in May," KSI tweeted.<\/p>\n

"Great. I accept you as the backup opponent," Paul responded. "Fight is at 185. There are no rehydration clauses. Stay in shape and we will give you a call if needed. Thanks buddy for being so humble and committed."<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old surrendered after video spread on social media of Diaz choking a man unconscious during a fight in the city's popular Bourbon Street. In the video, the man is seen confronting Diaz as people fight around them.<\/p>\n

Diaz then puts him into a chokehold before letting him drop to the ground.<\/p>\n

Police said Petersen was found "bleeding from the rear of his head".<\/p>\n

Diaz, 38, has been one of the most popular fighters in MMA since 2016, when he split two entertaining bouts with Conor McGregor.<\/p>\n

Diaz and his older brother, former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz, are well-known for their brash fighting style, their strict training standards, their embrace of marijuana culture and an overall anti-authoritarian attitude that appeals greatly to MMA fans.<\/p>\n

Nate Diaz has fought for the UFC since 2007, but he is a promotional free agent after completing his UFC contract last year with a submission of Tony Ferguson. Diaz has said he would be open to returning to the UFC in the future, but he also launched his own combat sports promotion, Real Fight Inc., last year.<\/p>\n

Diaz is also following the path of many MMA stars by moving to the boxing ring, where paydays are often larger than in the UFC. He is scheduled to fight Paul in August in an eight-round boxing match in Dallas.<\/p>\n
