North Melbourne<\/a> great Wayne Carey<\/a> has revealed a new detail about his affair which tore the club apart two decades ago.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCarey, now 51, was caught having an extramarital relationship with the wife of Kangaroos teammate Anthony Stevens in 2002.<\/p>\n

After the pair were outed and the affair became public, Carey – considered by many as the best Australian football player of all time – sensationally quit the club and went to Adelaide.<\/p>\n

\ufeffTensions have seemingly simmered over the years, despite so much time having passed, and only last year it was reported Carey and Stevens clashed inside a pub during a Kangaroos premiership reunion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stevens has maintained Carey never apologised for the affair.<\/p>\n

On his new podcast, The Truth Hurts<\/em>, Carey revealed the idea didn't even cross his mind at the time.<\/p>\n

"I was really quick to just ring (club officials) Geoff Walsh and Greg Miller and rang straight away… The thought was, they say fight or flight," Carey said of the immediate aftermath to the affair going public.<\/p>\n

"But straight away the thought for me was, 'I have got to walk away'. There was no other thought in my mind.<\/p>\n

"For those who think I got sacked, that wasn't the case. I quit straight away.<\/p>\n

"There was no thought. The apology thing never really came into (my) mind at that point. It was just, 'I have to separate myself from the club'."<\/p>\n

Carey had spent 12 years at North Melbourne prior to his sensational exit, and won two premierships with the club, on top of scores of personal accolades including seven All-Australian jumpers, four as captain.<\/p>\n

The club hasn't won a title since Carey left, and has struggled badly in recent years.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffIn 2021, Kangaroos legend Brent Harvey detailed just how damaging the affair had been on the club and the players<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt put our football club back four or five years," he said.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It was big, the press conference, there were people on top of cars, there were people in trees taking photos of a group that did nothing wrong.<\/p>\n

"It was mind-blowing."<\/p>\n

On the same podcast this week, former Kangaroos coach Denis Pagan said he wished Carey had apologised to Stevens.<\/p>\n

"It was the greatest tragedy in my time in coaching," Pagan told The Truth Hurts<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I wish we could have changed it. You could have come out straight away and said, 'I am terribly, terribly sorry'.<\/p>\n

"I thought you were reluctant to say you were sorry at the start."<\/p>\n
