A\ufeff 45-year-old man has died while travelling home after competing in the London Marathon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Steve Shanks completed the 42 kilometre course<\/a> in two hours and 53 minutes, and was described as an "experienced runner."<\/p>\n

"It's with great sadness, that I wish to announce the loss of my wonderful husband, Stephen Shanks," his wife Jessica said.<\/p>\n

"His passing was sudden and out of the blue. He was returning home having spent the day participating in the London Marathon. As you can imagine I'm absolutely in shock and devastated."<\/p>\n

In a statement, organisers said Shanks had "completed many marathons".<\/p>\n

"All involved in the organisation of the London Marathon would like to express sincere condolences to Steve's wife Jess, his family and friends," it said.<\/p>\n

"The cause of death will be established later through medical examination. The family has asked for privacy and no further details will be released in accordance with their wishes.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

In a tribute posted on its website, the Holme Pierrepont Running Club said it was "shocked and saddened" by Shanks' death.<\/p>\n

"Steve had won many club championships over all distances, achieving a clean sweep in 2009," it said.<\/p>\n

"He competed in races all over Europe and was a keen parkrun tourist, with a particular penchant for Poland. His talents were not limited to road running and perhaps his greatest achievement was the completion of a Bob Graham Round in 2008.<\/p>\n

"He represented the club in cross country, and won a club running championship in 2008. He raced on the track, also competing in the civil service championships.<\/p>\n

"He will be hugely missed and we offer our heartfelt condolences to our friend, his wife Jess.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
