Brownlow Medal<\/a> winner Jimmy Bartel<\/a> has backed calls for a radical change to the system behind the AFL's top individual honour in light of the crackdown on dangerous tackles.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bartel, who claimed "Charlie" in 2007, believes players suspended for "a football act" for one game should remain in the running for the Brownlow Medal.<\/p>\n

Essendon captain Zach Merrett is no longer in the race for this year's Brownlow Medal<\/a> after failing to overturn a one-match ban for a dangerous tackle at the AFL tribunal last week.<\/p>\n

The AFL issued a memo to clubs\ufeff regarding dangerous tackles in the past week, reinforcing that it would penalise tackles that involve double movements, excessive rotation or driving an opponent into the ground.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThis is back to the discussion we've had a lot (about) football and non-football acts," Bartel said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

"I'm a believer that that should be the first column you have on the MRO (match review officer) framework because then you can elevate the tummy punches and the punching. That's not part of our game.<\/p>\n

"It allows a bit of leniency for accidents that do happen in the game. We call it the fabric of the game; we want to see some tackling, some physicality.<\/p>\n

"If you do get suspended for a football act\ufeff, up to a week, you should still be eligible for the Brownlow.<\/p>\n

"If you get a week, it's actually costing you your chance of winning the Brownlow anyway."<\/p>\n

Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy, who won the prestigious award in 1988, believes the AFL should be even more tolerant with the Brownlow Medal system.<\/p>\n

The Melbourne and Sydney legend argued on SEN's Sportsday<\/em> last week that players banned for less than three games should still be eligible for the top gong.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeff"I think it would be a disgrace if Zach Merrett lost a potential Brownlow Medal for a tackle gone wrong," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's not a dirty game anymore, there's very few punches thrown.<\/p>\n

"Anything two weeks or under you can still win the Brownlow Medal."<\/p>\n

Kane Cornes is another former AFL player who has weighed in on the Brownlow Medal controversy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It is time for the AFL to consider two possible changes to the Brownlow to take into account today's legally troubled game," Cornes wrote in The Age last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"First, have the match review officer or tribunal not only declare a penalty for offences but also determine if a player is still eligible for the Brownlow. This also can be challenged by the player, just as the penalty is today.<\/p>\n
