Emma Raducanu<\/a>'s slide down the World Tennis Association<\/a> rankings is appearing to take its toll on the former US Open<\/a> champion after a bizarre press conference from the normally talkative star.<\/p>\n

Raducanu heads into the Madrid Open<\/a> under pressure, after a run of three straight defeats. Another defeat in the first round of the tournament would put her outside the world's top 100.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 20-year-old is currently ranked 85 and will play 73rd ranked Viktoriya Tomova in her opening match. If she wins she'll face world number one Iga Swiatek.<\/p>\n

Speaking to media in the traditional pre-tournament press conference, Raducanu offered up 58 words in response to 16 questions.<\/p>\n

Reportedly, a question around the tough draw was met with "it is what it is" while she responded with "we're managing it" regarding her wrist injury.<\/p>\n

\ufeffQuestions around her friendship with fellow British tennis player Jodie Burrage were also met with short answers.<\/p>\n

Her abrupt answers soon wore thin with the journalists present, with one saying: "You're not making this very easy. Is this deliberate that you don't want to make this too easy for us?"\ufeff She replied, "No."<\/p>\n

A WTA official then ended the press conference.<\/p>\n

The \ufeffMadrid Open has uploaded a number of videos on its Twitch, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook including interviews with Carlos Alcaraz and Roberto Bautista but doesn't appear to feature Raducanu's press conference.<\/p>\n

Raducanu has been ruthlessly criticised by the English press over brand partnerships and other issues since she became the first qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam title in 2021.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Eurosport last year, tennis great Chris Evert referred to the treatment of Raducanu as 'brutal\ufeff'.<\/p>\n

"I just think with the tabloids in England, it's brutal. I mean, they camp out at your doorstep if you're a superstar," she said. \ufeff<\/p>\n
