NRL<\/a> boss Peter V'landys<\/a> has cracked under the weight of Rugby Australia's<\/a> push to poach players, suggesting exemptions could be made for league clubs to counter-attack.<\/p>\n

It's the latest barb from league land directed at the 15-man game amid the ongoing code war, led largely by union's governing body.<\/p>\n

Several top league players have been approached to switch sides, the most notable acquisition by Rugby Australia to date being Joseph Suaalii<\/a> of Sydney Roosters<\/a> fame.<\/p>\n

Payne Haas has also been shoulder-tapped<\/a>, although his Brisbane Broncos have tried to nerf any speculation he'll depart the club amid talks of a new deal being forthcoming.<\/p>\n

Max Jorgensen turned down an offer to play for the Roosters and is tipped to make his Wallabies<\/a> debut this year at just 18 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We have been looking at bringing in salary cap exemptions for players from other countries for some time," V'landys told the Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It was about bringing in players from America and other nations. It would also apply to players from other sports. And, yes, other sports includes rugby.<\/p>\n

"If a Wallaby or an All Black wanted to come over, we'd look at cap exemptions for sure.<\/p>\n

"We have been looking at this for quite a while, and it's a good time to revisit this. It's something I'd like to see come in and come in now."<\/p>\n

Talk of a salary cap exemption has not sat well with league legends, however.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Sunday Footy Show<\/em>, immortal Andrew Johns<\/a> said there is "no threat" in losing players like Haas or Panthers captain Nathan Cleary \u2013 another on union's hit list.<\/p>\n

"Payne Haas won't go to rugby," he said.<\/p>\n

"I see they're chasing Nathan Cleary. Laughable. Why would you want to go and play rugby union? You touch the ball three times.<\/p>\n

"Mate, who's the boss? Whatever his name is \u2013 everything I see he goes 'Oh, come to union. You're gonna see the world'," he said, referencing Rugby Australia chair Hamish McLennan.<\/p>\n

"Mate, if you want to see the world, I'll pay for a Contiki tour. You'll have more fun. Payne Haas would go over and run the ball three times."<\/p>\n

Billy Slater<\/a> echoed that sentiment, saying players are already handsomely paid in NRL and any move would have to be made in the knowledge that they already have passion for union.<\/p>\n

The Melbourne Storm legend drummed up the chatter of poaching players as "more of a media thing" and criticised V'landys for feeling he needs to protect the sport.<\/p>\n

"What's the temptation to go there? You've got to love the game," Slater said of union.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If you love the game you want to go and explore that, well, go and do it.<\/p>\n

"The money's not gonna turn you. It surely can't be a money thing. The money's really good in our game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Our product is the best it's ever been. It's a great entertainment product. It's a great product to play.<\/p>\n

"I don't know why we would need to have dispensations on salary cap to keep players here or get other players."<\/p>\n

The code war talk comes just days after Roger Tuivasa-Sheck announced his departure from the Blues back to the Warriors<\/a>. \ufeff<\/p>\n
