As fresh reports emerge of a bidding \ufeffwar between Canberra Raiders<\/a> and the Dolphins for Jack Wighton<\/a>'s services, the South Sydney Rabbitohs<\/a> are becoming the favourite for his signature<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Having originally tabled a three-year-deal to the Raiders five-eighth, Wayne Bennett's Dolphins<\/a> have reportedly increased that offer to four years as the battle intensifies.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCanberra's $4.4m contract over four years is believed to be the highest bid for Wighton but the presence of great mate Latrell Mitchell<\/a> could land him at the Rabbitohs.<\/p>\n

If he was to sign with South Sydney, Wighton is tipped to play at centre on a reported $3.4m deal over four seasons.<\/p>\n

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns isn't quite sure how the scenario would work. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"There'd be question marks about it because (sacrificing) $400k a year is a lot, $400,000 a year over four years is a hell of a lot of money," he said on Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Rabbitohs would have to do significant work to keep their salary cap in order if Wighton did join. Currently, Jed Cartwright, Michael Chee-Kam, Dean Hawkins, Terell Kalo Kalo, Richie Kennar, Liam Knight, Hame Sele and Blake Taafe are believed to be the club's top 30 players without a contract for next season.<\/p>\n

And while Wighton would be taking a pay cut, Johns believes the potential $800,000 salary for a centre \ufeffis a significant sum.<\/p>\n

"It's a lot of money to spend \ufeffon a centre, especially these days the way the teams play, centres don't get the ball," he said.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNSW Blues coach Brad Fittler added there could be an option for a positional change if Wighton was to sign with South Sydney.<\/p>\n

"We played Jack into the back row (in Origin), it'd be interesting," he said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"We've changed the positions \ufeffso much, especially of lock, in the old days lock could defend on an edge.<\/p>\n

"He could be a good lock."<\/p>\n

If Wighton was to move into the middle of the field, Rabbitohs captain Cam Murray would have to shift onto an edge, a change that neither Johns nor Fittler appeared sold on.<\/p>\n
