The Bulldogs<\/a> are in danger of losing star Englishman Luke Thompson<\/a> for next season.<\/p>\n

Thompson has been sorely missed by the club in the early rounds, sidelined with a serious foot injury suffered at training in February.<\/p>\n

But the 27-year-old remains a key figure at Belmore and is expected to be back on the park in a month or so.<\/p>\n

Thompson comes off contract at the end of the season and has received a massive four-year deal from the rich Wigan<\/a> club.<\/p>\n

It's money the Bulldogs can't match – despite Thompson's current contract being worth $800,000 a season – so ultimately it will come down to whether he wants to stay in Australia for the lifestyle or return home to take up a deal that will secure his future long-term.<\/p>\n

Complicating the situation is that Thompson has two managers – one in the UK and one in Sydney.<\/p>\n

DISGRACED KNIGHT'S REDEMPTION STORY\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Remember Jarrod Mullen<\/a>?<\/p>\n

The former Newcastle Knights<\/a> pin-up boy and Blues Origin halfback went off the rails in 2017, copping a lengthy suspension for using the anabolic steroid drostanolone.<\/p>\n

He then nearly died from a cocaine overdose the following year and pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in 2019 and received a community corrections order.<\/p>\n

But Mullen, now aged 36, has turned his life around.<\/p>\n

He is lecturing young kids about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and is playing for Corrimal in the Illawarra competition.<\/p>\n

I had a spy at a recent trial game and he reported that Mullen totally dominated despite playing against some players nearly half his age.<\/p>\n

Nice to see a good redemption story and a guy putting back into the game after making bad choices a few years back.<\/p>\n

STAR'S 'SECOND COMING' AT TIGERS\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Former Junior Kiwis captain Manaia Cherrington has rejoined the Wests Tigers – effective immediately.<\/p>\n

A talented hooker who played 16 games for the club in 2015-16, Cherrington has spent the past couple of seasons at Ipswich in the Queensland Cup.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old has moved back to Sydney for personal reasons and will add depth to the Tigers in the hooking spot behind Api Koroisau and Jake Simpkin.<\/p>\n

He will start his second coming at the Tigers in the NSW Cup but is expected to put pressure on Simpkin for the back-up hooking role as the season unfolds.<\/p>\n

DRAGONS TO LOSE ANOTHER STAR\ufeff<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Papua New Guinea skipper Elsie Albert is considering leaving the Dragons for one of the NRLW's new teams, Parramatta.<\/p>\n

The Eels have already signed up one Dragons star, the highly rated Rachel Pearson, and have now set their sights on Albert.<\/p>\n

A tough front-rower who is well respected throughout the NRLW, Albert played for the Dragons in the delayed 2021 grand final last April.<\/p>\n

Albert is a rugby league trailblazer – in 2020 she became the first homegrown Papua New Guinean woman to play in the NRLW when she signed with the Dragons and the 26-year-old has been one of the team's mainstays.<\/p>\n

The Dragons have been raided by poachers from the four new teams leading up to the new season, that kicks off in July, after their success last season.<\/p>\n

But coach Jamie Soward remains confident of fielding a competitive team.<\/p>\n
