Young Saints<\/a> forward Anthony Caminiti has been suspended for three weeks after having his striking charge downgraded at the tribunal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Caminiti was originally referred straight to the tribunal for striking Collingwood's Nathan Murphy in an off-the-ball incident in the closing stages of the Pies' six-point victory on Sunday night.<\/a><\/p>\n

If the charge was upheld, the AFL<\/a> were asking for a five-match ban, or four matches if the "intentional" charge was downgraded to "careless". St Kilda was asking for four and three respectively.<\/p>\n

It was St Kilda who got its wish – the charge was downgraded and three weeks the penalty.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Footage appeared to show Caminiti strike Murphy in the head in response to Murphy first hitting the draftee in the chest, triggering some push and shove between the pair.<\/p>\n

In his hearing, Caminiti said throughout the game to that point, Murphy would "instigate contact first", and he was trying to get away.<\/p>\n

"As a forward, as part of my craft, I'm trying to get away from him and create space … putting my forearm in his chest and therefore creating space between him and me," he told the tribunal.<\/p>\n

As for the incident itself, Caminiti said he didn't deliberately try to hit Murphy in the face.<\/p>\n

"I was anticipating the ball to get launched into the forward line. I momentarily looked at Murphy, attempted to put my forearm into his chest, anticipating a marking contest that didn't happen.<\/p>\n

"At the time, I was completely unaware I'd hit him anywhere near the head or chin, I thought it was just a normal hit to the chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Now looking at the vision, it's clear I must've accidentally clipped him in the chin."<\/p>\n

Caminiti said he had also reached out to Murphy after the clash.<\/p>\n

"I was very remorseful and wanted to say how sorry I was for the action," he said.<\/p>\n

"I felt quite bad at the outcome. I just wanted to see if he was OK and just wanted to apologise."<\/p>\n

Earlier, Bombers skipper Zach Merrett also had his one-game ban from a rough conduct charge for a tackle on Demons Tom Sparrow\ufeff upheld.<\/p>\n

He will miss the Bombers traditional Anzac Day clash against the Magpies.\ufeff<\/p>\n
