England<\/a> Test coach Brendon McCullum<\/a> is having his relationship with bookmaker 22Bet India \ufeffexplored by the England and Wales Cricket Board after he appeared in a series of advertisements for the company.<\/p>\n

Discussions between the Board and representatives of McCullum have started due to New Zealand's Problem Gambling Foundation filing an official complaint to the ECB and the nation's Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). \ufeff<\/p>\n

Under New Zealand<\/a> legislation, overseas companies are banned from advertising gambling services to New Zealanders, with the ads from 22Bet India appearing on YouTube. \ufeff<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old appears in the videos, with references to the Indian Premier League and the offer of signed merchandise to punters. \ufeff<\/p>\n

In a since deleted Twitter post, McCullum also promoted the Cyprus-based bookmaker. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"The IPL is coming, and I think all cricket fans are excited for this big event," McCullum said in the video.<\/p>\n

"My friends at 22Bet are ready to make your IPL experience even more fascinating. 22Bet India guarantees the best odds.<\/p>\n

"Bet to play, bet to win."<\/p>\n

According to reports, 22Bet's casino services are blacklisted in more than 60 countries, including Australia. \ufeff<\/p>\n

One of the main issues behind 22Bet's operation is its statement that '22Bet is a highly trusted bookmaker in New Zealand' – this has been identified as 'misleading' by the DIA.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"22Bet's current advertising is misleading as they are not a registered New Zealand sports bookmaker, nor are they licensed or regulated in New Zealand by the DIA," a DIA spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"We are currently looking at avenues we can pursue, including contacting 22Bet advising them to change their misleading marketing and advertising which insinuates in any way that they are a New Zealand-based gambling operator."<\/p>\n

In a statement on Saturday, the ECB was quick to assure the public that McCullum was not under investigation.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe are currently exploring the matter, and (are) in discussions with Brendon around his relationship with the Cypriot-based betting company, 22Bet," the ECB statement said.<\/p>\n

"We have rules in place around gambling, and will always seek to ensure these are followed."<\/p>\n

Under the ECB'S anti-corruption code, \ufeff'participants' are prohibited from 'directly or indirectly enticing, persuading, encouraging or facilitating any other party to enter into a bet in relation to the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of any match or competition'.<\/p>\n

News of McCullum's bookmaker relationship comes with the Ashes set to kick off in just under two months on June 16. The first test will be played at Edgbaston. \ufeff<\/p>\n
