UPDATE:<\/strong> \ufeffP\ufeffhil Mickelson<\/a> has turned back the clock, shooting his lowest-ever final round at Augusta National to surge up the leaderboard at the Masters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 52-year-old, a three-time winner of the tournament, shot 65 to finish the tournament at eight-under. That left him in a tie for second, alongside third round leader Brooks Koepka, and four behind the champion, Jon Rahm.<\/p>\n

Mickelson becomes the oldest player ever to record a top-five finish at the Masters, breaking the record set by three-time champion Jimmy Demaret\ufeff, who finished fifth in 1962 at the age of 51.<\/p>\n

Mickelson missed last year's tournament amid the fallout from his "scary motherf—ers" comment about Saudi Arabia's support for the LIV Golf tour. \ufeffHe was subsequently banned from the PGA Tour after signing with Greg Norman's breakaway group.<\/p>\n

"I'm very appreciative that we're here; that we are able to play in the majors," Mickelson said.<\/p>\n

"I thought it was exciting that this tournament rose above it all to have the best players in the world here and lost all the pettiness; that was great."<\/p>\n

Mickelson made five birdies on the second nine alone, with his sole bogey for the day coming at the fifth hole.<\/p>\n

It's the first time he's contended at a major since his history-making win at the PGA Championship in 2021, where he became the oldest ever major champion.<\/p>\n

"This tournament isn't about what tour you play from," he explained.<\/p>\n

"There's players from all over the world on many different tours, and you're bringing the best players to play against each other in the majors.<\/p>\n

"That's what it's all about. That's what the game of golf should be. There's always going to be and should always be a place for historical events like this, but it's okay to have a little bit of different and variety in the game of golf."<\/p>\n

Mickelson and the rest of the LIV Golf stars, including fellow Masters runner-up Brooks Koepka, will head to Australia later this month for a tournament in Adelaide.<\/p>\n

"We're excited to go down there," Mickelson said.<\/p>\n

"There's a lot of anticipation, and we're looking forward to that. At the end of this week, I'm going to meet with some of my teammates, and we're going to practice together before we head on a plane and get down there. I'm looking forward to that."<\/p>\n
