The Western Bulldogs<\/a> have added a sporting prodigy to its list, signing James O'Donnell as a category B rookie.<\/p>\n

O'Donnell will add to his family's lineage in the VFL\/AFL<\/a> after his grandfather, Kevin, and father, Simon, played for St Kilda during the 1940s and 1980s respectively.<\/p>\n

Simon O'Donnell, more recognisable as a former international cricketer, also represented Australia in six test matches and 87 ODI matches. He is now a leading horse racing commentator.<\/p>\n

A talented dual sport junior, the 20-year-old had been pursuing a cricket career – representing Essendon in the Victoria Premier Cricket competition.<\/p>\n

Having not played a football match since 2019, he arrives at Whitten Oval with huge potential.<\/p>\n

Before deciding to put all his efforts into cricket, O'Donnell\ufeff played football alongside now-teammate Luke Cleary in the Victorian under 12 schoolboys side and played his junior football in the midfield for Kew and Xavier College.<\/p>\n

Bulldogs national recruiting manager Dom Milesi said he was thrilled to have O'Donnell onboard after closely following the talented youngster if a pivot to football ever became an option.<\/p>\n

"We've had our eye on James across the year and we're really excited that he's chosen to return to football with the Western Bulldogs," he said in a club statement.<\/p>\n

"James has a really strong athletic profile at 197cm and 88kg, having a significant growth spurt since last playing football, bringing some versatility to our list.<\/p>\n

"Everyone is looking forward to welcoming him to the club and watching him develop in the coming years."\ufeff<\/p>\n

O'Donnell will commence training with the club on Friday.<\/p>\n
