Champion Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt\ufeff has given a damning assessment of the AFL<\/a>'s dissent rule, declaring "no one has an idea" and admitting "I'm scratching my head".<\/p>\n

Umpire Craig Fleer sparked explosive debate\ufeff when he paid a free kick against Giants midfielder Stephen Coniglio in the fourth quarter of Saturday's match between GWS and Carlton, which the Blues won by 10 points.<\/p>\n

The umpire explained on the field that the former GWS captain had flung out his arms and yelled, "How is that not a free kick?".<\/p>\n

The whistleblower's decision and explanation left many people flabbergasted, as did some parts of an AFL statement attributed to head of umpiring Dan Richardson.<\/p>\n

"Just like we have some players or coaches who occasionally get emotional, or become overly expressive when under pressure, we also have umpires with differing levels of temperament," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"We have a set of guidelines for the umpires to work between, and we coach them, but we also can't coach human response."<\/p>\n

Riewoldt was scathing of the dissent rule on Fox Sports' AFL 360<\/em>\ufeff on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

"No one has an idea because the umpires \u2014 they've admitted each umpire has got a different emotional reaction to players. So how are we to know whether we catch someone on a bad day or a good day?" Riewoldt said.<\/p>\n

"There's moments after that dissent free kick where players are doing the exact same thing and we don't get the same result, so I'm scratching my head."<\/p>\n

Riewoldt admitted he'd said "way worse things" and "done more demonstrative stuff to umpires".<\/p>\n

"There's four umpires. One is generally around the centre of the ground or with the key forwards. (You're asking), 'Why is that a free kick?'. That's a bit of a natural reaction, but that could be deemed as dissent, which is the Coniglio example there," Riewoldt said.<\/p>\n

"I'm still scratching my head about it and I think most of the footy public are, as well."<\/p>\n

Carlton defender Sam Docherty played in the game against GWS at Sydney Olympic Park.<\/p>\n

He admitted to being confused when the umpire made his controversial dissent decision.<\/p>\n

"I had no idea. I had to ask the umpire what it was and he said, 'Dissent'," Docherty said.<\/p>\n

"I assumed that it was he swore at him or something; that was my initial reaction.<\/p>\n

"Having seen it after, it does happen a lot in games."<\/p>\n

But Docherty also drew attention to the tough job umpires have.<\/p>\n

"I had a presser (on Monday) and my response to it all is it's going to be hard with human error in our game," Docherty said.<\/p>\n

"I think there's always going to be a sense of grey in our game and we do have to accept that's part of it and umpires are humans. They're going to make mistakes just like we as players make mistakes.<\/p>\n

"It would be nice to know whether that's going to be an ongoing thing moving forward, if that's sort of back to the start of last year when that was 100 per cent a free kick.<\/p>\n

"It was a really costly moment in that game of footy. If I was on the other side I'd be a bit more flat about it, but we got the win off the back of it."<\/p>\n
