The Maroons are set to name their new coach in days and it's understood Queensland Rugby League powerbrokers are torn between two candidates – premiership-winning coach Paul Green and Origin legend Billy Slater.<\/p>\n
The QRL board will hold its annual general meeting on Friday and is expected to thrash out their differences about who will lead the state during the 2021 series.<\/p>\n
While most of the board and chairman Bruce Hatcher are convinced Green is the man for the job, even interviewing him for the position already, there is a faction that believes Slater should be installed into the job this year.<\/p>\n

Slater is viewed as a long-term appointment while Green was touted as a possible one-series signing. It's said Slater was being groomed for the position for 2022 but some on the board say he should be thrown in the deep end.<\/p>\n
Slater has earned plaudits from influential figures like Mal Meninga, Craig Bellamy, Cameron Smith which could see him get over the line.<\/p>\n
Maroons legend Wally Lewis said the QRL has a big decision ahead of them.<\/p>\n
"Greeny has displayed his worth in winning an NRL premiership which is the ultimate for every coach in the game," he said.<\/p>\n

"The Cowboys guys always said 'Greeny' was very determined and never too soft. He would always spend countless hours assessing situations.<\/p>\n
"I've seen how committed and serious Billy is to the tasks at hand. For three times a year he would make sure he is well prepared.<\/p>\n
"His achievements as a footballer indicate he is ready to perform at the highest level. It is one of the toughest jobs in the game to coach and win an Origin series.<\/p>\n
"I was pretty happy with most of the decisions I made in the game but this is a decision I'm glad I'm not making."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
