A\ufeff Matt Burton<\/a> field goal from a difficult position lifted the Bulldogs<\/a> to an enthralling 15-14 victory over the Cowboys<\/a> in golden point on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs trailed 14-10 with less than a minute left on the clock but forced golden point through a Josh Addo-Carr try, the former Storm speedster crossing on the left wing after clasping a superb Paul Alamoti pass.<\/p>\n

And while Burton failed to convert from the left touchline after the siren \u2014 the ball smacked into the left upright \u2014 the brilliant Canterbury five-eighth stole victory for his side\ufeff with less than five seconds remaining in the first half of golden point.<\/p>\n

Burton chipped for Addo-Carr as the Bulldogs rolled out of their half of the field, before the Kangaroos flyer put in his own kick over Cowboys fullback Tom Chester.<\/p>\n

Although Addo-Carr was winning the race for the ball against Chester and Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt, he copped a wicked bounce.<\/p>\n

But young Canterbury back-rower Jacob Preston, who bagged two tries in the game, pounced on the ball.<\/p>\n

Burton's heroics followed.<\/p>\n

Kyle Flanagan tossed the footy to Burton from dummy-half and the New South Wales State of Origin representative\ufeff nailed a field goal.<\/p>\n

He kicked the field goal from behind the 30-metre line and from about 10 metres inside the left touchline.<\/p>\n

It was the first time the Bulldogs led in the match.<\/p>\n

As the Canterbury fans braving the wet conditions at Stadium Australia went berserk, Burton took off on a celebratory run with his arms above his head.<\/p>\n

Fittingly, the first player to embrace him was club legend Josh Reynolds, who was playing his first game for the Bulldogs since round 26, 2017.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffMatt Burton with the golden left boot has absolutely come out with a clutch play here to win it for the Dogs," said Fox League's Cooper Cronk.<\/p>\n

"Outstanding\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo hailed the tenacity of his side in his press conference.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I've been proud of them every week but tonight, with the adversity they had to go through and how they just hung in there, (I'm) super proud," Ciraldo said.<\/p>\n

"They're just such a tough group, they're just so gritty.<\/p>\n

"In wasn't easy tonight and we weren't perfect, but I thought we were the better team and deserved to win\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Canterbury lost forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner\ufeff to a failed head injury assessment just two minutes into the game.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs were also one man down for 10 minutes after forward Jayden Okunbor was reported and sin-binned for performing a hip-drop tackle on Jason Taumalolo in the 14th minute.<\/p>\n

They held out the Cowboys and even managed to score themselves, Preston crossing for the first of his two tries.\ufeff<\/p>\n

While the Bulldogs' win elevated them into eighth on the ladder by the completion of round five, the Cowboys \u2014 who finished third on the ladder in 2022 and reached the preliminary finals \u2014 are languishing in 14th.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs are now set to meet the Rabbitohs in their traditional Good Friday match at Stadium Australia\ufeff, while the Cowboys will next face the Dolphins in Townsville on Friday night.<\/p>\n
