Adelaide Crows CEO Andrew Fagan has surprisingly quit on the eve of the 2021 AFL season.<\/p>\n

Fagan and the Crows announced on Thursday they would be parting ways following a dismal 2020 season which landed Adelaide's first ever wooden spoon.<\/p>\n

The Crows press release said Fagan would "transition" out of his job as the club "embarks upon a new strategic agenda."<\/p>\n

"I initiated this conversation about a transition with former chairman Rob Chapman more than a year ago," Fagan said.<\/p>\n

"In recent times we have made a number of key decisions, relating to both football personnel and other areas of strategic focus, with a view to best preparing the club for a post-pandemic Australian sporting landscape."<\/p>\n

Fagan oversaw some massive highs and awful lows during his seven year tenure.<\/p>\n

He helped guide the Crows to their first grand final in two decades while the club's women's team won two AFLW premierships under his leadership.<\/p>\n

Fagan also led the club through the trauma of coach Phil Walsh's death in 2015, which the Crows described as their "most challenging time."<\/p>\n

He also survived the fallout from a highly controversial pre-season camp in 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fagan said he no longer had the energy for the next stage of such a demanding job, which has got even harder during a global pandemic.<\/p>\n

"The CEO who leads the club through this process must be in it for the long haul and I am not that person, and I firmly believe this position should not be a long-term role for any individual.<\/p>\n

"It is demanding and intense and the football industry moves at a fast pace, and I relish the thought of spending some time with my family before embarking on a fresh challenge.<\/p>\n

"My time at the Crows has provided me with so many highlights and learnings and importantly, I will leave with some lifelong friendships."<\/p>\n

Adelaide is now seeking expressions of interest from candidates.<\/p>\n

"Given the much talked about changes that have taken place, including the commencement of a rebuild of the playing list and development of a new strategic plan following the global pandemic among others, the timing is now right," chairman John Olsen said.<\/p>\n

"When Andrew first arrived at the Crows, he spoke openly about his term being in the vicinity of 5 to 7 years.<\/p>\n

"The board thanks him for his service and acknowledges his contribution to the growth and stewardship of the Club during some very challenging periods.<\/p>\n
