Phil Gould<\/a> has labelled social media "\ufeffthe scourge of the planet" and laid bare the role he thinks it played in the latest Latrell Mitchell<\/a> racism controversy.<\/p>\n

NRL<\/a> and New South Wales Polic\ufeffe investigations are ongoing after Mitchell was the victim of a spectator's racial slur during the opening game of round two.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred as the South Sydney fullback walked up the Penrith Stadium tunnel at half-time during the Rabbitohs' clash with the Panthers last Thursday night.<\/p>\n

The perpetrator was a 15-year-old.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffAll these kids live their life on social media," Gould said on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em><\/a> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"It's not acceptable behaviour, but it's commonplace on social media and you think you (can) get away with it, you think you can hide behind the anonymity of social media. Someone just thinks that they can go out in public and do this?<\/p>\n

"This is where it is and that's where the education needs to start.<\/p>\n

"As I say, I don't know anything about his upbringing, I don't know anything about his parentage, I don't know anything about his schooling.<\/p>\n

"But for a teenage kid of this age to come out with a comment like that in that environment at the time, something's got to be wrong. They've got to be living under a rock to not know that's unacceptable. It's not acceptable."<\/p>\n

A host of past and present NRL and AFL stars hav\ufeffe been victims of racism on social media, including Mitchell, Inglis, Josh Addo-Carr, Eddie Betts, Adam Goodes and Cyril Rioli.<\/p>\n

"Under the anonymity of social media it is common practice. We all know it," Gould added.<\/p>\n

"Abuse and all of this sort of stuff, whether it's racial or any sort of vilification, is common practice in social media.<\/p>\n

"This is what these kids grow up with.\ufeff They think it's normal, they think it's commonplace. They don't know where to draw the line. The education just hasn't been sufficient. You get incidents like this."<\/p>\n

Gould added that while such incidents were "unsavoury", they presented opportunities to "raise awareness".<\/p>\n

"Wayne Bennett said the right thing; it doesn't happen amongst the players, it doesn't happen amongst our clubs. That went out long ago, long ago. It just doesn't happen," Gould said.<\/p>\n

"So why do we accept it from our fans, or people who purport to be fans?"<\/p>\n

Paul Gallen\ufeff has long been targeted by abuse of other kinds on social media.<\/p>\n

"I've said from day one social media should be like a car license," the former Sharks captain said on 100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Everyone's account should be verified. You should have your picture on the account, your name on the account. They should be verified by these multibillion-dollar companies\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"I can't believe they're not.<\/p>\n

"There's so many people who get to hide behind this and get away with saying things like this. They do. It's wrong, it really is wrong."<\/p>\n
