M\ufeffelbourne<\/a> legend Billy Slater<\/a> has all but ruled himself out of taking the Storm coaching reins from Craig Bellamy<\/a> – at least for now.<\/p>\n

Bellamy, \ufeff63, last year signed a new five-year contract with the Victorian club, but the deal doesn't stipulate he has to act as head coach for the entirety.<\/p>\n

In fact, the club is allowing the veteran supercoach to commit to the job on a season-by-season basis, \ufeffand once he decides to step down from coaching he can assume a different role for the Storm.<\/p>\n

Bellamy is coaching the NRL team this year but there's no guarantee beyond 2023, meaning Melbourne may need a new head coach as early as next season.<\/p>\n

Slater – who played all of his 319 NRL games in the purple strip – \ufeffwould be an ideal candidate to step into those shoes.<\/p>\n

He entered the head coaching world last year for Queensland, and steered the Maroons to a famous State of Origin series victory on debut.<\/p>\n

He also continues to work part-time with the Storm\ufeff under Bellamy, in conjunction with his duties for Nine.<\/p>\n

"I'd love for him to come be our head coach, but I don't know if it really appeals to him," Storm forward Christian Welch told 100% Footy<\/em> of Slater last week.<\/p>\n

Slater, 39, was asked the question directly on Wide World of Sports' The Billy Slater Podcast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I really enjoy my life at the moment. Like Christian said, I've got a good balance to it," Slater said.<\/p>\n

"The Melbourne Storm mean a lot to me. I've spent half my life at that club, and I'm still there now as a part-time coach, still contributing to the club.<\/p>\n

"At the moment it's a no (I won't take over from Bellamy). I don't see myself as an NRL coach.<\/p>\n

"I love doing my work for Channel Nine. Obviously the State of Origin stuff has come up over the last 12 months, so that's another challenge for me.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

"(That is) probably a start to my head coaching career – where that goes I'm not too sure.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

With Slater essentially withdrawing his name from contention, many good judges have Jason Ryles as a leading contender to replace Bellamy at the Storm.<\/p>\n

Ryles was an assistant coach under the Melbourne mastermind between 2016 and 2021, and also worked with England's rugby team before joining the Roosters as an assistant.<\/p>\n

His three-year contract with the Chooks \ufeffis due to expire at the end of next year.<\/p>\n
