Maria Cummins, mother of Australian Test captain Pat Cummins<\/a>, died overnight, Cricket Australia<\/a> confirmed.<\/p>\n

The news broke prior to play on day two of Australia's fourth Test with India in Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n

The team will wear black armbands as a sign of respect.<\/p>\n

Cummins' mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 when Cummins was still in school in year seven. After undergoing chemotherapy, she went into remission.<\/p>\n

However, a year ago, her cancer returned. Before her passing, she was put into palliative care. <\/p>\n

"We are deeply saddened at the passing of Maria Cummins overnight," read a statement.<\/p>\n

"On behalf of Australian Cricket, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat, the Cummins family and their friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The Australian men's team will today wear black armbands as a mark of respect."<\/p>\n

The BCCI offered Cummins its condolences.<\/p>\n

"On behalf of Indian Cricket, we express our sadness at the passing away of Pat Cummins mother," a statement read.<\/p>\n

"Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family in this difficult period\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Cummins opted to sit out of the third Test to be at his mother's bedside. He has remained out of the side since.<\/p>\n

Steve Smith took the captain's post, leading the team to its first win of the series in Indore.<\/p>\n
