With the club failing to play finals footy in each of the past two years with Mbye leading the group, the 27-year-old admitted the time was right to step down.<\/p>\n
The former Bulldog says he relinquishes the captaincy feeling "proud" of what he accomplished while acknowledging he is now better off spending more time looking at his own performance.<\/p>\n

"It's something that I'm proud of," he told Nine News.<\/em><\/p>\n "I gave it a good crack.<\/p>\n "We didn't have too much success, so there's no point \u2013 if you do the same thing over and over again, and it's not working, it's pretty stupid. It's time to try something different.<\/p>\n "I know it is a team sport but you need to get your job right first so you can allow everyone to get their job right.<\/p>\n "I found for myself, the captaincy stuff \u2013 I kind of felt obliged to help everyone else before myself."<\/p>\n Asked who should take on the role as captain, Mbye said he hoped off-season recruit James Tamou<\/a> lands the role.<\/p>\n Tamou, 32, has played 267 NRL games to date including 12 appearances at Origin level for the Blues and 12 for the Kangaroos at Test level. He also won a premiership with the Cowboys in 2015 and was part of Penrith's grand final squad, who lost to the Storm last year.<\/p>\n "James Tamou has come in," Mbye said.<\/p>\n "He's got a good record in terms of experience and success.
