Cricket Australia says it is monitoring the situation in South Africa on a daily basis, ahead of a possible tour there in the coming weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Selectors have unveiled a 19-man squad for the series<\/a>, which is still yet to be given the formal go-ahead, with the COVID-19 situation in that country cause for concern.<\/p>\n

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, South Africa has recorded nearly 1.5 million cases of the virus and more than 41,000 deaths.<\/p>\n

Should the tour proceed, the team is likely to leave Australia in late February, with three Tests to be played in early March.<\/p>\n

"We're doing everything we can to give the tour every chance to be successful," CA's Ben Oliver told reporters.<\/p>\n

"As you'd appreciate, there are a number of fairly significant challenges in running international sport during a pandemic, so we are still working through that with Cricket South Africa.<\/p>\n

"We hope to be in a position shortly where we can resolve all of the outstanding items."<\/p>\n

Oliver played down any suggestions CA had sought priority access to a vaccine<\/a> for its players and staff ahead of the South African tour.<\/p>\n

News Corp reported on the weekend that CA's chief medical officer, Dr John Orchard, had written to the chief medical officer, Professor Paul Kelly, "to investigate whether there is any possibility of obtaining a dose of any of these vaccines in Australia or elsewhere prior to Feb 24", when the team is due to depart.<\/p>\n

"We obviously sought some clarification on the vaccine timeline here in Australia, just to understand how that would overlay with our tours," Oliver explained.<\/p>\n

"To clarify that, the priority is making sure our group can go on tour and return back to Australia safely, and we're doing everything we can around that."<\/p>\n

With 'bubble fatigue' an issue for players<\/a> who have been on the road for six months or longer, CA is conscious it's something it needs to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt there are significant challenges with bubble life, but the way that our group has carried themselves throughout has been exceptional," Oliver said.<\/p>\n

"We're obviously very focused on the health and well-being of our people, so we've put in place the best possible environments for people to operate in when they are inside the bubbles, or the hubs.<\/p>\n

"We're making sure we've got the appropriate support, there's no doubt there's some fatigue in there.<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt we've got to keep monitoring that, we'll continue to prioritise that."<\/p>\n

Oliver said he was "as confident as you can be in the middle of a pandemic" that the South African tour would go ahead, but noted the situation was very fluid.<\/p>\n

"We've been fortunate here in Australia to have relatively low cases of COVID, but we know obviously in South Africa, they're unfortunately experiencing a second wave of the virus," he said.<\/p>\n

"We're working hard with CSA to establish all of the protocols that would sit around the environment the team would need to operate in, we're also working hard with our own authorities here, just on making sure we've got clear and safe passage for the team, going into and out of South Africa.<\/p>\n

"We'll obviously keep the health and safety of our players, staff and our community at the absolute forefront of our decision making, hence why we're not quite in a position to formally announce the tour is proceeding."<\/p>\n
