Mitchell Pearce's horror off-season has got even worse after suffering a thumb injury that requires surgery.<\/p>\n

The Newcastle Knights halfback hurt his right thumb in a "training incident" last week and will go under the knife today.<\/p>\n

The club said Pearce's injury was considered minor and he is expected to be fit for the start of the NRL season.<\/p>\n

But the setback adds to a nightmare month for Pearce, who lost the Knights captaincy after a text message scandal involving a Newcastle employee.<\/a><\/p>\n

Pearce was visibly distressed as he fronted the media after his scheduled wedding to fiancee Kristin Scott was cancelled.<\/p>\n

"For me it's been a traumatic few weeks for my personal life and those I love," Pearce said.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately my actions have impacted the team and more importantly the people I have closest to me, Kristin and my family.<\/p>\n

\"NRL<\/p>\n

"I'm taking steps now to address these issues and for me to step down as captain this season.<\/p>\n

"I love this club and I love my family and I'm committed to working as hard as I can to be the best man I can be both on and off the field."<\/p>\n

The Knights also confirmed that young forward Jirah Momoisea suffered a ruptured Achilles at training before Christmas.<\/p>\n
