Australian cricket legend and former Melbourne Stars weapon Shane Warne<\/a> has handed every one of the club's players a report card in the wake of their failed Big Bash League campaign – and he's roasted nearly all of them.<\/p>\n

Warne is among the many experts and fans left baffled at the Stars' failure to qualify for the BBL10 finals series despite being jampacked with supreme talent.<\/p>\n

Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Nic Maddinson, Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa and Billy Stanlake were all members of the XI that lost to the Sydney Sixers on Tuesday night – and every one of them have played international cricket for Australia.<\/p>\n

Ben Dunk was released from the Stars' squad late in the tournament and has also represented Australia on the international stage.<\/p>\n

The Melbourne franchise – the BBL09 runners-up – have arguably the most envied list on paper of all clubs and were considered a hot chance to go one step further this summer.<\/p>\n

They haven't won a BBL title in the first 10 years of the competition's history and have often been severely hamstrung by international selection.<\/p>\n

However, that wasn't the case this summer, as all one-day and T20 internationals against India had wrapped up before the December 10 start date of the BBL tournament.<\/p>\n

The Stars' hopes of clawing a BBL10 finals position were dashed when the Sixers tonight grabbed the Bash Boost at the MCG, a bonus point rewarded to the team in front at the halfway mark of the chasing side's innings.<\/p>\n

That prompted Warne to work through the entire Melbourne XI, assessing every player on their BBL10 campaigns.<\/p>\n

"I think they'll look at all their players and say, 'How have they actually performed this year?'" Warne said on Fox Cricket's coverage.<\/p>\n

"If you look down, there's Stoinis. How's he done? He's had some good games but should have done better. Had plenty of opportunities, got a few 20s … but didn't really get that big one.<\/p>\n

"Seb Gotch – they'll be looking at that wicketkeeper-batsman role.<\/p>\n

"Nick Larkin I think has been fantastic. He's been the stand-out for them.<\/p>\n

"Glenn Maxwell hasn't done enough but has been fantastic in some games.<\/p>\n

"Nic Maddinson – he's had an average year as well. He's better than what he's done.<\/p>\n

"Hilton Cartwright – he's just come good at the end. He's better than what he showed before that.<\/p>\n

"Coulter-Nile – I think they'll be looking at his spot and whether they'll need him in the squad or not.<\/p>\n

"(Sam) Rainbird – he's done okay with limited chances.<\/p>\n

"(Adam) Zampa – we know what quality he is.<\/p>\n

"I think (Billy) Stanlake's done well at times.<\/p>\n

"Zahir Khan's been good and a few of the others have been okay.<\/p>\n

"So if you look through that there haven't been too many players who have had an outstanding season."<\/p>\n

Stoinis was the Stars' top run-scorer of BBL10 but only finished eighth on the competition leaderboard, having compiled 396 runs at an average of 33.<\/p>\n

And Zampa was the Stars' top wicket-taker but only finished seventh on the tournament leaderboard, having taken 19 scalps at an average of 17.47 and an economy-rate of 7.35.<\/p>\n

Warne was much more positive in his assessment of the Sixers' players.<\/p>\n

"If you look at the other side tonight – (Josh) Philippe, (Daniel) Hughes, (James) Vince, (Moises) Henriques have all had an outstanding season," Warne said.<\/p>\n

"(Jordan) Silk's had a great year, (Dan) Christian's done very well, (Carlos) Brathwaite's been average, (Sean) Abbott's been with the Test side and (Ben) Dwarshuis has been awesome.<\/p>\n

"So most of the players in the top teams have done well, but the good players from the Stars haven't done well and their not-so-bigger players have been poor. So that's why they find themselves at the bottom."<\/p>\n

The five clubs that have qualified for the finals are the Sixers, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers.<\/p>\n

The two Melbourne franchises – the Stars and Renegades – finished second-last and last respectively.<\/p>\n
