The controversy in the aftermath of UFC 284<\/a>\ufeff has continued to rage with Islam Makhachev<\/a> issuing a warning to Dan Hooker over claims he cheated.<\/p>\n

Following Makhachev's win over Alexander Volkanovski<\/a> in Perth, the Aussie's City Kickboxing teammate, Hooker, accused the lightweight champion of illegally using an IV to rehydrate ahead of the clash.<\/p>\n

"Dumb c— thinks he can fly to Australia, hire a nurse to give him an IV and we won't find out. Cheating dog," Hooker wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Since Hooker's claims, a presumption of guilt has clouded the Russian, who won by unanimous decision but still sits behind Volkanovski in the promotion's pound for pound rankings.<\/p>\n

Makhachev's manager Rizvan Magomedov called the allegations "BS" and the fighter himself has now came out swinging on Twitter:<\/p>\n

"You must be held accountable for such accusations," Makhachev wrote.<\/p>\n

Using an IV drip to rehydrate was common practice in combat sports until the UFC partnered with USADA and implemented a rule change in 2016.<\/p>\n

Currently, IV infusions and\/or injections that exceed 100ml during a 12-hour period are prohibited, according to USADA guidelines.<\/p>\n

City Kickboxing coach Eugene Bareman, who mentors both Volkanovski and Hooker, told the MMA Hour he suggested Hooker not send out the tweet.<\/p>\n

"I advised Dan against even talking about it," Bareman said. "Look, as you can see, that information has holes in it, that's what I'm alluding to, but also there's enough information there for to be like, 'Eeeh\u2026'<\/p>\n

"This is why Alex and the rest of the team are laughing because we're like, something's going on there, we just can't reliably say what it is.<\/p>\n

"It's frustrating because the whole sport should be played on an even playing field.<\/p>\n

"Then again, you can't reliably say that Islam cheated, so I wouldn't go out there and say that in the manner that Dan did.<\/p>\n

"That's just \u2014 I don't think you can reliably say that. But something was going on there."<\/p>\n

Bareman explained that it's possible that either Makhachev or teammate Zubaira Tukhugov could have misused the IVs.<\/p>\n

Tukhugov missed weight by over a pound for a lightweight contest with Elves Brener, which he went on to lose via split decision.<\/p>\n

"Either it was Zubaira or whether it was Islam, something's gone on there," Bareman said.<\/p>\n

"If it was Zubaira and not Islam, then Islam should be distanced. If anyone on my team was doing something illegal, then I would immediately distance the team from that person.<\/p>\n

"Maybe something will come out in the wash, maybe it won't, but I think the more important thing is to focus on the fight and not worry about that so much.<\/p>\n

"Congratulations to Islam and Javier and his other coaches who I'm not so familiar with, but congratulations to those guys, they won. And congratulations to Alex.<\/p>\n

"I'm super proud of Alex and what he was able to do and we'll move on. Give us the next big challenge because that's what these guys do."<\/p>\n

\ufeffHooker's comments could come back to haunt him if he sees the Russian in public while claims of cheating have gone down a different path in the UFC before.<\/p>\n

Ahead of his UFC 159 clash against Chael Sonnen, former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones told the combat sports media, Sonnen, had been doing steroids his entire career.<\/p>\n

In response, Sonnen threatened to take legal action which eventually forced Jones to apologise.\ufeff<\/p>\n
