But the former Test captain can't picture the New Year's Test being stripped from the SCG and gifted to the Adelaide venue.<\/p>\n

South Australian Premier \ufeffPeter Malinauskas and the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) have approached Cricket Australia about the possibility of stealing the New Year's Test, according to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Calls for the New Year's Test to be relocated escalated as rain again wreaked havoc during Australia's match against South Africa this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not a ball was bowled on day three, taking the number of washed-out days in SCG Tests to 26. That's 17 more days than the Australian venue with the second-highest number of washed-out days: the MCG.<\/p>\n

Rain has affected every one of the last nine Sydney Tests, sixth of which have ended in a draw.\ufeff<\/p>\n

But Chappell suspects South Australian powers would "have their work cut out" in their bid to pinch the New Year's Test.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI mean, the SCG's got to be one of the two main grounds (in Australia), obviously with the MCG," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"I think Adelaide did a very smart thing in establishing themselves as the day-night Test match, and I would have thought that would be ideal for Adelaide, rather than trying to battle and take that Test match.<\/p>\n

"Cricket New South Wales has always got to be wary and they've got to be on their mettle, but I wouldn't be too worried about that.<\/p>\n

"I mean, what can you do about the weather other than\ufeff build a bloody stadium with a roof on it? And who's going to build that? They're not going to build it in Adelaide. OK, they're not going to have as much rain. They're certainly not going to build it in Sydney."<\/p>\n

The NSW government hasn't shown an appetite for stadium improvements in recent times.<\/p>\n

It scrapped\ufeff plans for an $800 million upgrade of Stadium Australia in 2020, before binning a $250 million pledge to invest in Sydney's suburban grounds in 2022.<\/p>\n

"You can jump up and down," Chappell added.<\/p>\n

"And you'd have to go through longer records rather than just recent records (when analysing weather).<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't trust Cricket Australia any further than I could throw 'em.<\/p>\n

"But there's nothing you can do about the weather other than build a stadium with a roof on it, and in my opinion that's just not going to happen.<\/p>\n

"I don't think there's much the SCG can do about it, but I don't see them losing the SCG Test."<\/p>\n

Shane Warne argued the Gabba should be given the New Year's Test and the SCG the first Test of the summer, so Sydney's inclement early-January weather is avoided.<\/p>\n

When that view of the late cricket legend was put to Chappell, he brushed it off as biased.<\/p>\n

"Well, Warnie had a terrific brain, but he did speak a lot of Victoria-oriented stuff," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"And in the time I had with Warnie he wasn't that inclined to Sydney, so I would take his comments \ufeffwith a grain of salt."<\/p>\n
