One of the most influential individuals in Lewis Hamilton's<\/a> Formula 1<\/a> reign with Mercedes<\/a> has jumped ship to a rival team.<\/p>\n

James Vowles, the former chief strategist at Mercedes, has been poached by Williams where he will be its new team principal.<\/p>\n

Vowles began working in Formula 1 with Honda and stayed with the team when it was spectacularly sold to Ross Brawn for $1 to become Brawn GP.<\/p>\n

The team won the 2009 championship with Jenson Button before being bought by Mercedes who Vowles has stayed with up until this year.<\/p>\n

Vowles enjoyed a successful stint at Mercedes, winning six drivers' championships with Lewis Hamilton, one with Nico Rosbergs, and eight constructors' championships.<\/p>\n

Vowles takes up the position at Williams which was recently vacated by Jost Capito<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I cannot wait to start with Williams Racing," said Vowles.<\/p>\n

"It's an honour to join a team with such an incredibly rich heritage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After Williams founder Frank Williams and Capito before him, Vowles becomes just the third team principal in the championship-winning squad's storied history.<\/p>\n

Vowles hailed Mercedes, in particular its team principal Toto Wolff, after his 12-year spell with the Silver Arrows.<\/p>\n

"Mercedes have been hugely supportive on my journey, and we part on excellent terms after over 20 years of working in Brackley," said Vowles.<\/p>\n

"I am grateful for everything Toto and the team have provided, and it has been such a special experience to journey together through failure and success."<\/p>\n

Hamilton acknowledged Vowles' departure on social media.<\/p>\n

"I am so grateful and proud to have worked with James for the past 10 years," he wrote.<\/p>\n

"Together we have won over 80 races and 15 titles. This is such a great move and I couldn't be happier for him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We all need change in order to progress and I'm confident he'll push Williams forward to be more competitive."<\/p>\n

Williams goes into the 2023 season with one new driver in American Logan Sargeant, while Anglo-Thai driver Alexander Albon retains his place in the team.<\/p>\n

The Formula 1 season gets underway with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vowles will start working with Williams on February 20 just before season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.<\/p>\n
