Newport County goalkeeper Tom King has set a new record for the longest goal ever scored in a competitive football match.<\/p>\n
King's goal would be the only showing from his side in their league Two 1-1 draw with Cheltenham Town, when he launched the ball from his own six-yard box and over the head of his counterpart Joshua Griffiths in the opposite goal.<\/p>\n
King's goal was scored from a distance of 96.01 metres, making it the longest ever measured in a competitive football match, according to Guinness World Records.<\/p>\n
The official Guinness World Records website confirmed the new mark, saying: "With his epic downfield kick, King officially broke the record for the longest goal scored in a competitive football (soccer) match, which covered an incredible distance of 96.01m (105 yards).<\/p>\n

"Booting the ball from his own six-yard-box, it was picked up by the wind and soared into the net just out of opposition goalkeeper Joshua Griffiths' reach."<\/p>\n
The previous record was set by another keeper, Asmir Begovic for Stoke City, who scored from 91.9m on November 2, 2013 against Southampton.<\/p>\n
"I'm absolutely delighted because it's not something that I intentionally set out to do," King said on the club's website.<\/p>\n
"I'm sure it will be talked about for a long time to come, so I'm proud and I'm sure my family will be extremely proud too.<\/p>\n
"I'll have to drop Asmir a message to send my commiserations. It's different territory for me because I never dreamt of being in the books that you get for Christmas every year.<\/p>\n
