The AFL<\/a> has\ufeff sacked the umpire at the centre of the Brownlow Medal<\/a> betting scandal but decided against changing the voting system.<\/p>\n

Michael Pell was one of four men\ufeff arrested last month amid suspicious betting on the AFL's highest individual award<\/a>, having allegedly leaked votes from matches this year.<\/p>\n

The saga led\ufeff to a host of high-profile people in the AFL world, including Brisbane Lions captain Dayne Zorko<\/a> and former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, calling for Brownlow voting to be stripped from umpires.<\/p>\n

But AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan<\/a> revealed on Thursday that voting would "stay exactly the same".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"All the suggestions I've heard \u2014 it's not that they're not worthy, but they wouldn't have dealt with this issue," McLachlan said.<\/p>\n

"In the end, the allegations go to the personal integrity of an individual.<\/p>\n

"At some point, right through every system, someone has to make a decision when they have information that, if they're compromised, can lead to issues like we've allegedly got here."<\/p>\n

The AFL informed umpires this week that Pell's contract had been terminated and that a replacement would be appointed during summer.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bets were allegedly made on more than 10 games in which Pell, a former field umpire, officiated.<\/p>\n

"There is no employment relationship between the AFL and the umpire at the centre of the allegations," McLachlan said.<\/p>\n

"The broader consequences are now with the police because it's a criminal matter."<\/p>\n

Umpires award Brownlow\ufeff votes for each game on a 3-2-1 basis and there is extreme security around that information until McLachlan reveals the vote-getters on Brownlow night, held in grand final week.<\/p>\n

McLachlan, who plans on retiring as the AFL's chief executive in April, doesn't believe the integrity of the Brownlow Medal was tarnished by the betting controversy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There's damage caused by that scandal and I think the umpires have been hurting, but I don't think the integrity of the Brownlow is compromised in any way," McLachlan said.<\/p>\n

"There was not any manipulation of the votes.<\/p>\n

"It was an issue of personal integrity, allegedly. We've got to see how that plays out.<\/p>\n

"The allegations have wounded the umpires personally and I feel for them, but I don't think it bleeds into the Brownlow."<\/p>\n

Carlton midfielder Patrick Cripps won this year's Brownlow Medal<\/a>\ufeff with 29 votes.<\/p>\n
