Melbourne Renegades<\/a> have got their Big Bash<\/a> campaign underway with a win, but not before a huge technical malfunction nearly cost them the dearly.<\/p>\n

Cricket can always find ways to surprise you, and s\ufeffeeing a player given out for 'hit wicket' when they were a good half a metre away from the stumps was certainly a shock.<\/p>\n

The Renegades were batting first and former Sixer Nic Maddinson was cruising on 42 from 25 balls.<\/p>\n

He\ufeff hooked one down to fine leg for a single, only for the stumps to light up as he swung around, suggesting that he'd stepped on his own wicket.<\/p>\n

The commentary team were \ufefflamenting Maddinson's dismissal in such soft fashion – until the replay.<\/p>\n

"Oh what's happened there? What's it come off? The bails have just come off," former New Zealand international Ian Smith said.<\/p>\n

It didn't take long for a review to be launched, and Maddinson was quickly recalled to the crease.<\/p>\n

"All I can think is when his back foot swivelled round and made contact with the ground, it shook the ground," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"Maybe it wasn't that stable, because it looked when he put that back foot down closest to the stumps, the bail fell off.<\/p>\n

"Who knows? Spooky."<\/p>\n

The player himself didn't let the strange incident affect him, and continued on with his fine innings. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Maddinson went on to clobber 87 from 49 balls, as the Renegades defended their total of 7-166, restricting the Heat to \ufeff6-144.<\/p>\n

"I've never seen that before, especially the timing of it when he'd just hit the ball," Brendon Julian added.<\/p>\n

"That is unbelievable. I've never seen that at all."<\/p>\n

Renegades coach David Saker was full of praise for his opener, who has also skippered the team since last year. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's been fantastic around the group, \ufeffhe's led by example since we've been in camp," Saker said.<\/p>\n

"He has been starved of runs in this form of the game and it's great to see him go out there and do what he's done – when you get your captain leading from the front, it's really good for the whole team."<\/p>\n
