Craig Young has broken his silence on why he decided to quit as St George Illawarra<\/a> chairman last month.<\/p>\n

Young resigned from his post just days after it was revealed he used club letterhead to provide a character reference for fallen NRL player Brett Finch<\/a>, who plead guilty in court to sharing child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNow, Young has spoken publicly about the saga in an interview with the Sunday Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There's been speculation Young was forced to quit by the Dragons, but he says that was not the case.<\/p>\n

"I quit… it was purely my call," Young said.<\/p>\n

\"Former<\/p>\n

"I didn't get forced out and I told you why. But I don't back away from my support [for Finch].<\/p>\n

"In fact, I'd do it all again tomorrow. You don't desert your mates. That's how I've lived my life and how I've brought up my kids. I have no problem with living like that."<\/p>\n

Young says he decided to quit so as not to be a distraction for the club and the players as they return for pre-season training.<\/p>\n

"There were things to consider," Young said.<\/p>\n

"The players were coming back to training and I didn't want to disrupt that. I needed to make sure it was not something they would have to deal with."<\/p>\n
