What could have been a dream Wallabies debut turned to heartbreak for Ben Donaldson, who missed the conversion that would have prevented a historic loss to Italy on Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

With time up, Australia lock \ufeffCadeyrn Neville scored a try to bring the tourists within a point of the world's 12th ranked team at Stadio Artemio Franchi.<\/p>\n

And so the equation was simple for Donaldson, who lined up the potential game winner with Italy clinging on to a one point lead in Florence.<\/p>\n

But with his parents watching on in the stands, the NSW youngster's attempt faded wide to the right, sparking jubilation from the Azzurri and devastation for Donaldson.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old was immediately consoled by his teammates but the pain will linger.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's tough, you know. He's hurting," Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said.<\/p>\n

\"Noah<\/p>\n

"We've definitely got an arm around him. You can always look at the last few seconds of the game but there's a lot of things that we got wrong earlier on that put a dent in that situation and you're trying to steal a game.<\/p>\n

"We feel for him but it's not the reason we lost today."<\/p>\n

Donaldson was a late substitution at five-eighth for Noah Lolesio, who had a patchy performance in keeping with many of his teammates.<\/p>\n

"We didn't kick enough in the first half \u2013 we barely kicked the ball at all \u2013 so we didn't really have a chance to stress them and put them under heat," Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"Second half, probably at times we over-kicked but they're not Noah's issues.<\/p>\n

"I thought he was pretty composed, trained well all week in preparation. But we didn't dominate up front as we would have hoped, didn't get quick enough ball to allow him to play flat and on top of the defensive line."<\/p>\n
