Former Australian all-rounder Simon O'Donnell has warned of "trouble" ahead for coach Andrew McDonald<\/a>, given the way he was appointed to the role as Justin Langer's successor.<\/p>\n

McDonald has just overseen a disastrous T20 World Cup on home soil which saw Australia miss the semi finals. The team has been criticised after captain Aaron Finch<\/a> complained of being "tired" before the tournament even started, while Glenn Maxwell's statement that Australia's early exit "doesn't mean anything" has gone down like a lead balloon.<\/p>\n

Langer was axed \ufeffafter a revolt from the players<\/a>, despite leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2021 and a 4-0 Ashes win last summer.<\/p>\n

It's the players' involvement in the process that has alarm bells ringing for O'Donnell.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm a great believer that you can't lead by negotiation. You cannot lead by saying, 'I'll do it this way as long as you guys are happy'. Andrew McDonald must put his stamp on this and say, 'This is me as a coach'," O'Donnell said on SEN.<\/p>\n

\"Andrew<\/p>\n

"He's part player-appointed, so how does he do it? How is he their mate and their boss as well? When you muddy that line, I only see trouble.<\/p>\n

"I hope there's not, because Andrew McDonald is a ripping bloke, he's a very good coach, but I think the platform he's been put in on is a really, really dangerous one."<\/p>\n

It was Langer's intense approach that got the playing group offside, but O'Donnell pointed out that the coach's role can often put him offside with his charges.<\/p>\n

"When the player opinion started coming in is when this got murky," he said.<\/p>\n

"Leadership can never be by negotiation, you can never be there because the players say they like you. You're there because the performance has to be a certain level and there are certain standards you have to set to get there.<\/p>\n
